General Election Now! Is there a march?

Everyone I know is saying we need a general election now. The whole Question Time audience (- about 4) wanted one. Is there a March, or demo? I am going to demonstrate this weekend whether or not anyone joins me!

I’m wondering this too. I would definitely join if there was one up north. It all seems eerily quiet on the matter, even on mumsnet, I half suspect right wing influence is censoring the media and social media. A scary thought if it’s true.

EVHead · 22/10/2022 18:17

I’m ready to take to the streets! I’ve also just joined the Labour Party. Fuck this shit. 😡

There is a petition some where….

petition.parliament.uk/signatures/129804300/signed

A surprising low number of votes.

Sunshineandrainbow · 22/10/2022 18:23

Any heads up for a march?

flowerexpress · 22/10/2022 18:28

Hi, I think there's one in London on 5th November.

I think it’s a pointless day out. They are not going to have an election with such a big majority. It’s all a bit student politics.

The Tories don't want an election now because they know they would be crushed. Hence they won't be swayed by petitions/marches etc. They'll hang on to power with grim determination regardless of the impact to the country.

MaverickSnoopy · 23/10/2022 08:27

The petition was debated last week - you can watch it here
Read the transcript: hansard.parliament.uk/commons/2022-10-17/debates/78F30897-47A0-4D21-9135-DF1CD19E3AE4/EarlyGeneralElection

It wasn't given the attention it deserved due to more chaos going on. A lot of good was said. It's still worth signing, just to show what people think. I think they said it's the biggest petition to be debated.

There's a lot of talk on Twitter about a GE. I'm not on it but a family member keeps sending me links and telling me all about it. I think Facebook is a little more "don't talk about politics etc" - at least my circle is.

TizerorFizz · 23/10/2022 13:43

Whatever anyone thinks isn’t what the party in power will do. An election takes weeks. So after a summer of inactivity, we have more non governance? That’s not acceptable. The governing party might get their act together (I doubt it) but they don’t need to relinquish power unless 70 plus MPs defect.

BonnesVacances · 23/10/2022 18:25

On Twitter people from other countries are like WTF Britain? You're just going to put up with this shit? And people in the UK are like, yeah well what's the point. It won't change anything.

It's embarrassing to be British tbh. I'm going to the protest because one day I want to be able to say I tried, rather than Sat on my arse and moaned about it on the internet.

wigywhoo · 24/10/2022 13:09

We have a parliamentary system, PM
Is just a glorified cabinet minister. Did labour have an election when Blair left?

BonnesVacances · 24/10/2022 14:57

Yawn!

The difference here is that the Conservative party is in disarray. So it's more the fact that they are clearly incapable of leading parliament with their merry-go-round of leaders and that's why it needs to go back to the public to decide who it feels can govern this country.

And if you want to argue about Brown, Johnson had a few words about that himself. As I'm sure you know.

the80sweregreat · 25/10/2022 04:24

The Blair / Brown thing was different to this surely ? Plus it was over twelve years ago too
I'm Willing to give this new PM a chance, but you have to admit that the conservatives haven't covered themselves in any glory lately.

TizerorFizz · 25/10/2022 08:58

We have not changed our system of democracy. It was the same 30 years ago when Thatcher went. The party elects a new leader. If they are in power, they are PM. We are not a presidential system. We had a PR referendum in 2011 and it wasn’t supported. The electorate is scared of it.

Blair/Brown is identical. No additional manifesto. No election. There doesn’t need to be either. They just had the Granita agreement! Plus manifestos are usually in the bin fairly quickly after an election. Have you read any of them? They are not what any government sticks to as they are not binding snd circumstances change.

the80sweregreat · 25/10/2022 09:39

The 2011 vote was for AV ( alternative vote ) not PR
It was a low turn out.

TizerorFizz · 25/10/2022 19:38

@the80sweregreat
AV is a system of proportional representation. PR is not a system. It’s a desirable outcome. You could have party lists, or single transferable vote, mixed member PR and other systems. AV is ranking preferences and should produce PR.

the80sweregreat · 26/10/2022 07:16

I wasn't being clever , I was making the point that it wasn't a vote for full PR which is why many people I knew didn't bother voting for it

TizerorFizz · 26/10/2022 15:05

AV is a system which brings about PR. The big issue is that most people don’t understand what system might work best for us as we like a local mp to work for us. AV is better than FPTP.

the80sweregreat · 26/10/2022 17:22

I think it wasn't explained very well back then!

TizerorFizz · 26/10/2022 21:42

@the80sweregreat
It was a result of the Lib/Con agreement. The Lib Dems have had PR as a policy for a long long time. Not sure it was lack of explanation, more no will to change the status quo which the majority felt was serving them well. Also we have a huge dislike of “horse trading” here and the idea of politicians talking to each other snd agreeing a way forward was against our natural instincts. Sadly.

the80sweregreat · 26/10/2022 21:56

I know ! I did vote in 2011. I thought it was a good Idea
