Just listening to LBC and a caller said that, regardless of the fact Truss has only been PM for a few weeks (& wrecked the UK economy), she'll still receive a salary of £114,000 for the rest of her life. Is this actually true?? If so, I'm livid!

Cactuslove · 20/10/2022 17:48

I heard that too! If it's true its an absolute travesty!

Ihateboris · 20/10/2022 17:52

Seriously! Why?? How can this be right, when people are starving and freezing.

“Falling on her sword will have financial comforts for Liz Truss. She will become the seventh living ex-PM to enjoy a payoff of £115,000 annually to fund her 'public life'.

She will also retain a chauffeur-driven car and get round-the-clock protection for life, the costs of which are never discussed.”

miceonabranch · 20/10/2022 17:58

She makes me sick. Hopefully the money won't do her any good, the useless article.

ajandjjmum · 20/10/2022 17:58

It's not a salary, but expenses for duties undertaken as an ex PM.

Blair claims all of his, Brown and Cameron around £114K and Theresa May around £60K. Says it all!

TheGander · 20/10/2022 18:07

That my friends is A DISGRACE.

talknomore · 20/10/2022 18:07

All of them are at it.
www.theguardian.com/politics/2011/oct/28/margaret-thatcher-expenses-claim
By the time this article was written:
Thatcher has received £535,000 from the state since 2006, and John Major, who set up the allowance in 1991, has received £490,000. Tony Blair has claimed since 2007 and received £273,000. The figures reveal he received £169,076 in 2008-9, more than his salary in office.

Ihateboris · 20/10/2022 18:11

Disgusting. Truly disgusting. I'm so stressed out I need a fag and don't even smoke!! So I assume, we, as tax payers fund the ex MPs salaries, chaueffers etc etc?

To be fair, I think I would take 2 months of public humiliation for over 100 grand a year for life!

Maybe that's what she was in it for all along! Grin

Quveas · 20/10/2022 18:20

I am not defending it at all. But it isn't a salary. It is expenses. So the former PM doesn't receive it. Or shouldn't benefit personally. But it was introduced by the Tories, to benefit a certain former female PM. So yet another "lining of the nest" by tories. If Labour's PMs claimed it, they couldn't have done if Major hadn't introduced it.

Expenses for what though?

TheTeddyBears · 20/10/2022 18:38

Yawner his too and my first thoughts were well that's why she's quit. When I heard earlier I kept thinking I wouldn't have in her situation it's so embarrassing to leave the job so soon. However all the stress etc she's obvs just thought oh did this I'm off with an almost full pay for life!

It is bloody disgusting. So again we all pay for her to do nothing.

If it’s a set amount it’s a salary/pension. Expenses would involve incurring specific work related costs. I could argue that my salary is for “expenses”.

poorbuthappy · 20/10/2022 18:46

She isn't entitled to it. They have to be in the job for 60 days. Still shit obv but she won't get it

Your salary is given in exchange for work though. Or is "ex-PM" an actual job? (Sorry I was raised with no education bad politics at all)

Anniefrenchfry · 20/10/2022 18:56

It’s not for life it’s a one off payment up to 116k which is expenses to get back to private life and pay off all outstanding bills related to being prime minister, she only gets what she submits receipts for too.

True. So more of a final salary pension then.

From the Gov.uk website

Purpose

The PDCA was introduced to assist former Prime Ministers still active in public life. Payments are made only to meet the actual cost of continuing to fulfil public duties.

The costs are a reimbursement of incurred expenses for necessary office costs and secretarial costs arising from their special position in public life. The allowance is not paid to support private or parliamentary duties. The PDCA is in addition to any constituency office which they may maintain as a Member of Parliament. The PDCA allowance is paid from the Cabinet Office vote and administered by the Cabinet Office Finance Team.

Former Prime Ministers or their staff may only be reimbursed for legitimate salary or office expenses incurred in meeting the demands of the former Prime Minister’s public life up to the annual limit.

Copies of all supporting documentation e.g. salary details, receipts/travel cards for the former Prime Minister, or any of their staff, should be made available on request by either Cabinet Office Finance or the National Audit Office for audit purposes. The documents are not retained by the Cabinet Office.

WakingUpDistress · 20/10/2022 19:08

I think she is missing a couple if weeks to be entitled to it. So I imagine it depends on how quickly they can find someone to replace her!

But yes.
