Who is in charge - Jeremy Hunt?

As much as I think Liz Truss has been pretty useless so far, I find Jeremy Hunt's constant press comments over the last few days completely patronising to her, he has been slating everything she has done and she has completely disappeared off the radar hiding away somewhere. It seems that he is in charge and seems to want to be seen as sorting out the mess that the 'woman' made.. grgh

Don't think this has anything to with Liz Truss being a woman. How about the fact that she has made an almighty fuckup but blamed a man for it (KK)?
Anyone coming into the situation that Hunt has found himself in would distance themselves from the previous decisions, whatever the sex of the person who made them.

I’m more concerned with what he’s just announced. The price cap is only going to be in place till spring and then it will be about who they think needs it! It’s already gone up so much. Jfc. And the tax cut is axed. Great. So we’re all fucked even more now .

LizTrussIsACylon · 17/10/2022 12:08

Hunt was an interesting choice. Remainer, more liberal side of the party. Makes me wonder what the ERG think of it all.

We are less fucked than we were before. The impact on interest rates and inflation of those unfunded cuts was way more devastating for most people than energy prices or paying a little extra tax.

There are people who based on projections would see mortgages increase from monthly payments of £700/800, to over £2000. That isn't based on hearsay, that is based on modelling I myself have done for my financial services employer.

DismantledKing · 17/10/2022 12:08

There’s no mandate for any of this nonsense.
We’re all at the mercy of the Tories’ weird swivel-eyed membership, and it’s time that Tory MPs developed some kind of spine and organised a vote of no confidence alongside the Opposition.
it’s beyond a fucking joke.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 17/10/2022 12:09

I think the signalling here is pretty clear. Truss has been hollow-suited while the behind-the-scenes fixers of the Tory party engineer her removal.

I think they're just buying time while they work out which is the least worst option; remove her and plop yet another PM in (making the party look myopic and totally focused on its own internal wranglings) or just go for a general election and risk 100s of Tory MPs — some of whom are good, hard-working constituency MPs — losing their seats, and their jobs.

Well, to be honest she is a moron. Worst PM we have ever had.

The narrative is starting to shift though, isn't it? The Telegraph — the sodding Telegraph! — ran a story over the weekend about how Project Fear was right all along, and that Brexit is basically a terrible idea executed ineptly. The Overton window is beginning to shift back again towards a pro-European (if not pro-EU) view, I think.

I don’t think that’s true. Giving people less money to live on during a cost of living crisis is wrong. They raised taxes effectively. Low interest rates helps people stay in houses they couldn’t afford but it doesn’t help overall. House prices needed to come down.

WahineToa · 17/10/2022 12:17

Plus the energy issue is the priority.

Colderthanever · 17/10/2022 12:23

I’m really shocked she’s not out making a statement and taking control. She should have made a statement moments before him to show she was in charge and what he was doing was what she wanted. It’s like she’s hiding, it’s awful

I would argue the mortgage issue was quickly overtaking the energy issue.

Colderthanever · 17/10/2022 12:26

I also don’t think this is because she’s a woma and I am squirming you think so. Not everything is because someone is a woman. She’s fucked her job within days. Her sex is irrelevant

WahineToa · 17/10/2022 12:27

How? Those who were overextended would have to move house? Plenty of people don’t own their own home. The energy issue affects everyone.

And for those private renting, who do you think pays the landlord's increased mortgage costs? What do you think happens with mass repossessions?

You don't have to be overextended for a mortgage more than doubling to be a challenge. Especially when combined with everything else. Mortgages are stress tested when you take them - but were they stress tested with energy prices being 3x what they were, with food inflation through the roof, etc etc...no, they weren't.

You make it sound so easy - they would have to move house. No challenges with that:

  • might not have the money to pay all the associated costs
  • forced sales might mean negative equity, meaning they might not be allowed to sell or only do so with debt
  • where will they move to? If they don't have enough equity they won't be wblevto buy again so that's more people trying to get the same rental properties in an already screwed market
  • rent prices will go up due to rising mortgages and higher demand

Massive rises in mortgage rates don't exist in a bubble, impacting only those who you consider irresponsible. It will have a much wider effect

It has nothing to do with Liz Truss being a woman and everything to do with the fact that she is simply unsuited to the role of being Prime Minister. She isn't a natural for it and has about as much charisma as a plank of wood. She doesn't think things through either and just charged on ahead with her agenda regardless of consequences.

It began with arrogance and has now been replaced by a total loss of confidence, meaning both people's confidence in her, and her own self-confidence.

Hunt has been appointed Chancellor, but it is pretty clear that he is the de facto, behind the scenes Prime Minister in all but name. Hence why he could bin just about all of the mini budget without us hearing even a peep from Liz Truss.

Personally, I think a General Election is needed. The Tories have been in power too long and are flip flopping all over the place.

Topseyt123 · 18/10/2022 01:20

I should add, I think Liz Truss has made Teresa May seem like a great PM, and she wasn't. She was just slightly less inept than Truss.

❤ Come back, Ken Clarke Gordon Brown Alistair Darling George Osborne Philip Hammond, all is forgiven! ❤

messybutfun · 18/10/2022 04:32

when she did come out of hiding yesterday she looked like she was heavily sedated - I personally don’t think she is able to deal with any of it for much longer
