Could you actually be our Prime Minister?

So just that, could you actually be our Prime minister or is there anything in your past that would come back to haunt you?

I was just contemplating and had a sudden thought that actually I couldn't ever do it because of past activities, not illegal but way too embarrassing and or inappropriate so I'd end up as canon fodder within months.

Badly paid?

I'd agree for what comes with it even though it's many times higher than my own - the money doesn't really come until afterwards, certainly there are people I encounter who are on far more and would make any of the prime ministers we have all look fabulously competent! Not many people go far in politics without have a decent wedge behind them - I just don't think you'd survive the UK political world with any great standing if you don't have a solid financial base.

Personally, I'm still waiting for that someone different to break through that isn't fully enmeshed on any side of the argument - really wish a coalition had worked

I cannot see why anyone would enter politics - you need to have such a thick skin, and no care of what others might think of you.

I think I'm a strong and competent person, but I couldn't handle the continual judgement.

I'm not thick skinned enough and not egotistical enough. I'd hate going round peoples' houses asking to be elected. However, like most of us, I could probably do a better job than anyone has since Brown.

stayathomegardener · 16/10/2022 19:05

Yeah, I'd be up for this.

  1. I'd actually give a shit.
  2. I'd listen to grounded friends around me.
  3. I'm not a twat I promise.

Might be a few skeletons but I think the first three points will override those.

limitededitionbarbie · 16/10/2022 19:55

I'd prob be better behind the scenes as in getting shit done. I'm very moral as in I have do to the right thing I have a mega conscience but I'd be crap on telly

limitededitionbarbie · 16/10/2022 19:57

There are a couple of women on here I would back

MysweetAudrina · 16/10/2022 20:02

No, I'm a senior policy civil servant so I get to influence policy and law more than politicians and I am in my position through merit not popularity. Also I can be objective and I am faceless so my past doesn't really matter.

IntentionalError · 16/10/2022 20:06

No. I’m nowhere near ruthless enough, and I’m a hopeless liar, so the likes of Nick Robinson & Beth Rigby would rip me to shreds. I also need my space and my downtime, so living above the office & working 16 hour days would be a nightmare.

If I was going to work that hard & under that much pressure & scrutiny, I would want to be paid far more than the PM’s pathetic salary. CEOs of PLCs are paid millions, not £160k.

Suzi888 · 16/10/2022 20:06

Yes, I mean I wouldn’t be very good at it😂 but I have nothing in my past that would come for me apart from a dodgy fringe.

PolkaDotMankini · 16/10/2022 20:10

I need a decent night's sleep and a Sunday afternoon nap, so wouldn't be cut out for PM. There are also naked photos of me on the internet.

I've never burned £50 notes infront of homeless people, shagged a pig or hired a hitman though so I suppose I'm vaguely qualified.

HundredMilesAnHour · 16/10/2022 20:13

Unfortunately I think that the type of people who would make good PMs/MPs are exactly the sort of people who are smart enough - and lack the ego - to know that it's a poisoned chalice of a job that they'd have to be crazy (and egotistical) to do.

Someone wanting to be the PM is often a red flag that they'd make a terrible PM. Eh Liz?

RoachTheHorse · 18/10/2022 13:48

If being PM meant have a genuine desire to make the country work the best it can for everyone, to listen to advice from people in the know, while managing the emotional and work needs of my peers and cabinet allowing and supporting them to do their jobs while offering leadership and guidance. Probably.

If it's talking in sound bites and being incapable of self awareness then no.

I wouldn't want the job though. 24/7 rolling news and social media has ruined politics.

HRTQueen · 20/10/2022 07:09

No

some decisions you have to make will cause upset to many people.

I lose sleep over who to invite out for dinner or did I offend someone with a comment I made

ChocFrog · 20/10/2022 14:25

I’d love to do the job, and I think I’d be good for it, but yes I have a couple of minor skeletons in my closet I’d be worried would end up in the papers. Just drunken behaviour at parties stuff.

I do wonder though if some stuff is deliberately kept quiet by the media. I know something pretty embarrassing about one of the current Cabinet (from
their university days), it was well known then but I’ve never seen any mention of it in the press. So perhaps the media try not to bring up that kind of stuff, I dunno.

inthemiddlepiggyinthemiddle · 20/10/2022 14:29

Would anything come back to haunt me? Very possibly- I can't remember. 😂 One thing that they won't ever find is Tweets or SM posts that would make me resign, far too mundane for that!

fallinover · 20/10/2022 14:45

No.
I'm not any good at public speaking and I have no charisma.
I also photograph badly.

DH would make a decent fist of it being very good at public speaking and experienced in senior leadership roles.

fallinover · 20/10/2022 14:47

But it would involve a short term pay cut.
You seem to make money in the longer term.
But we actually need to pay our mortgage, school fees etc.
