This is your chance- local Elections

Are you sick of the status quo?

Are you tired of your bill's rising and no one seems to give a f**k?

Are you sick of the ruling elite pretending to empathise and then carry on with their law breaking/ tax avoidance/ funneling money to their chums?

Do you want to make them sit up and pay attention?

Well as you know there are local elections next week. Don't let this chance go. Make sure your voice is heard- vote for who you think will make the biggest difference.

I'm not going to tell you who to vote for, you know what's best. But dont let this chance go.

Local elections historically have a very low turn out, but this is your chance to say it loudly so that they can hear- You are not happy with the status quo, and they wont get away with it.

And if enough people vote, that it gives them the shock of their life, maybe just maybe theres a chance of change.

Make them scared to call a General Election. Despite what you think, they'll be looking very closely at the results, and if there isn't much of a turnout/ or a revolt - expect more of the same.

And where is the magic money tree? I agree - the ruling party are crap but show me a party who will deal with it better (and who know what a woman is?)

Im not saying there is a magic tree.

Locally we had about 53% voter turnout for the local elections last year. And we are a very narrow majority.

If there is a significant increase in voter turnout it will easily swing the majority.

This will be a stronger show of dissatisfaction than anything. At the moment all were hearing are platitudes, I mean that chat with Rishi yesterday was embarrassing- smug grin, and mansplaining why he can't increase spending- I understand inflation, thank you very much. At least we know what his favourite biscuit is.

But anyway- at least they are now considering investigating the £4.9 billion covid loan fraud- that they were initially going to write off- I mean where did the magic money come from that would enable them to do this?

And even considering a windfall tax on the energy companies- something that previously would " inhibit investment ".

A huge voter turnout will put the fear into them, they need to know who they serve and it isnt their rich chums- but the voting public

I admit I dont usually vote in the local elections, but I'm going to tell everyone I know and try and make sure they vote.

I'm sick of coming on to M/N, social media and moaning about cashflow problems, petrol prices, food costs, childcare costs, my non-existent wage increase.

Party sleaze, I mean is it just me??? Was politics this sleazy when I was younger, but I was just ignorant? Were they breaking laws, left right and centre? But I just didnt realise because I was a kid and didnt follow the news?

At least next week I can do something that may help.

Don't let this chance go.

It won't happen while we have the shower of absolute shite that is the current opposition party.

It's so depressing, I'm so angry at all of these people.

AnneLovesGilbert · 28/04/2022 17:08

We’re not having one.

Franklin12 · 28/04/2022 17:09

Are you a Labour supporter perhaps. I will vote for whomever I like thank you.

FFS, it's not just about austerity and WhO kNoWs wHaT a WoMaN iS.

You're obviously not paying attention.

Last night the Tories removed our right to peaceful protest. They also voted to bring the electoral commission under government control instead of being independent, which means future elections will be rigged. We also now need voter ID, which will create even more barriers for the marginalised to vote. And British citizenship can now be revoked without any notice. These fascists are criminal and need to be stopped as a matter of urgency.

I have come to the conclusion that the majority of people in England just don't care about any of this and will keep voting the Tories in and foisting them on the rest of the UK.

Why do you do the caps thing for issues re women’s rights?

GreenLunchBox · 28/04/2022 17:25

Oh and they passed the Health and Care bill that will accelerate privatisation of the NHS

They always hold these contentious votes at 11pm so that the turnout is low and they can pass their bills

I'm not asking you to vote for a particular party.

Vote for whoever you want, that's the beauty of democracy

All I know is, if there is a paltry turnout, e.g. 48% they know we are very apathetic, and that's where they want to keep us, but even a jump in turn out to 70% will make them think twice no three times before they make their policy decisions.

The Conservives can work for us, but they need to know that they can be voted out if we want them out.

The problem is that in most places won’t have a proper alternative to vote for to register dissatisfaction with the status quo.

CarrieCookie · 01/05/2022 09:54

I usually vote tory but will never again after the lies we were told during lockdown.
We have 2 candidates this week, Conservative & Labour and I'm not voting for either of them. Guess I'll have to spoil my ballot paper.
'Liars & Don't know what a woman is' should do it 😡

I am feeling very positive about potential change in our local elections this week. Our town is mentioned in this article in the Guardian today. Our existing Labour councillors are a breath of fresh air locally - demonstrating their commitment to the local community in so many different ways. Even my DM (80!) who has never voted Labour is switching on the basis of what she has seen locally & not just lots of door knocking.

It just shows, despite what you may think.

The power that be are paying attention to the results.

These aren't just the boring local elections that no one usually cares about.

Absolutely agree. Our town as predicted now has a Labour controlled council for the first time since the borough was founded in 1973.
Much excitement in the local media for the potential for making our town an even better place to live. Next stage getting rid our terrible longstanding Conservative MP. We are getting closer!

I think now if you vote tory, and you're struggling for money etc, you deserve it and clearly don't actually need any help. Otherwise you'd have voted for someone else that isn't making you poor.

Picking a party that ruins your life just because another 'doesn't know what a woman is' is frankly stupid. Because the party ruining your life also doesn't know or care. In fact they probably use women in their parties. You can take a few guesses as to how.

Least many people clearly understood this and the tories got half the amount of councillors labour did. Most aren't daft when voting.

Knittingchamp · 07/05/2022 08:56

Tories lost about 500 council seats, right? Maybe change is afoot.

Justcallmeanatm · 07/05/2022 12:26

I live in a SAFE tory ward. Labour candidate was the only to knock the door. I have tried on several occasions over the years to contact the tory councillor that was up for election and never ever had a reply. Labour won the seat by quite a substantial majority.
I think those in SAFE seats get lazy and think that they will be a councillor for ever but without putting in any effort.

And yet the press are saying it wasn't a disaster for the Tories. 🙄🤔
