Why did labour support the Covid passport measures but 100 Tories against?

Could someone with more UK politics knowledge please explain why almost 100 Tory MPs voted against the new covid measures, but it looks like most labour MPs supported? But then you have Jeremy Corbyn voting against as well? What is the factor driving voting for or against, is it general libertarianism rather than being left wing or right wing?

I don’t really have strong opinions either way on the merits of the actual decision, I’m just confused as to why Boris can always rely on Labour to support his measures and the opposition is from his own party?

Tories are usually on the side of business and the new rules will be detrimental to some businesses.

HannibalHayeski · 14/12/2021 20:19

Because the measures are sensible, and many Tory MPs are fucking imbeciles. HTH...

But not Boris.
SayAaa · 14/12/2021 20:22

Well, I'm naturally cynical but would think that those who voted against it stand to suffer financially if greater measures introduced.

onlychildhamster · 14/12/2021 20:23

The new covid measures are meant to slow down the spread of Omicron. Labour is voting with the government because right now, that is the priority.

Some Tories vote against the measures because they don't believe in vaccine passports and they believe that their vision of a society that does not mandate vaccine checks is more important than public health.. and Corbyn is voting against the vaccine passport/vaccine mandates because he believes it is counterproductive and promote division.

I’m just confused as to why Boris can always rely on Labour to support his measures

Labour have (generally speaking) throughout the pandemic called for restrictions to be brought in sooner than the Tories have actually done it. They’d look incredibly stupid to then refuse to back said restrictions once Boris was the one calling for it.
It would also mean they lost any ability to call for further restrictions. If the vote hadn’t gone through tonight, then whatever happens with covid from now on could be laid squarely at the feet of labour. “You played politics with people’s lives and didn’t support mask wearing and now look!” The Tory backbenchers could also be blamed but people don’t vote for backbenchers really, and it’s the Labour leadership that would get the brunt of the blame. Tory leadership would blame labour, and labour couldn’t exactly blame the Tory backbench if they’d sided with them.
Now when/if it all goes tits up Labour can say “we supported the government when we felt they were doing the right thing, but we’ve always criticised when we felt they weren’t going far enough”.

Thanks everyone! You have explained it well Smile

Those same Tories who voted against masks etc. because that is a dreadful authoritarian step comparable to Nazi Germany, also voted in favour of banning protests, allowing the government to remove people's nationality, and in support of voter suppression measures...

A mix of that and libertarianism I would think.

William Hague had what I thought was quite a good column in the Times today critical of the rebels position.

HannibalHayeski · 14/12/2021 20:34

The Tories claim to be on the side of business, but in actual fact are only on the side of big businesses that contribute to party funds or individual Tory MPs. Otherwise, in de Spaffle's own words, "fuck business",,,

No they're not. Brexit.

RedWingBoots · 14/12/2021 21:38

@Kidcurryski

Gotta say, Hanniibal, me old mate, you do talk some shit.
It isn't shit it is true.

Then again you clearly haven't talked to small business owners in a variety of spheres.

Kidcurryski · 14/12/2021 21:58

I wasn't just referring to the one comment Hannibal made. I might give them some credit but when their response is knee jerk, over-hyped and lacks any nuance, its ridiculous. They even say Boris is sensible and so not an imbecile. 🤷

Oh and my experience is that small businesses never think any govt does enough for them.

Ah, going for deletions now!

Give it up, nobody laughed the first time...

Kidcurryski · 14/12/2021 22:17

Hey, I haven't asked for deletions. They deleted me too and I never called you a rude word. Not that I was bothered. It says everything about you.

HannibalHeyes · 15/12/2021 00:15

Here we go again, deleting anti-Tory/anti-Brexshit posters, for the slightest of reasons. And without even telling them.

So much for "freedom of expression"...
