Why does England not shifting left like other countries?

Germany, USA, Scotland and other nations have been voting for left wing parties but England appears to be the exception. Any reason why?

The right wing control almost all the media here to a greater extent than most countries, and have patiently and consistently used prejudice and stereotyping (like much of this thread) to convince people that "the left" are their enemy. Whereas honest working class men of the people like Boris Johnson are their friend and can be trusted to look after their interests.

Kummerspeck · 03/10/2021 01:14

@PicsInRed

Because the UK left overtly despise those who would ordinarily vote for them, women, Jewish people and the working classes.
THIS THIS THIS!!!
MintJulia · 03/10/2021 01:15

Because the left wing in the UK is full on backbiting, in-fighting lunatics who are completely unelectable and therefore a waste of time.

If we had a credible centre=left party.......

Warhertisuff · 03/10/2021 07:26

The left is divisive, superior, sanctimonious and bitter - Angela Raynor's "scum" comment being a prime example.

Until they can coalesce around a positive vision for the U.K. that chimes with both middle England and "red wall" constituencies, they'll not form a Government.

And for as long as Labour has a leader that much of the party seems to either dislike or just tolerate, it can't expect the country to get behind it.

And it's Trans debate - which is a lose-lose issue for the party as it's an existential issue that splits otherwise natural Labour supporters down the middle, is the mail in its coffin.

Insertfunnyname · 03/10/2021 07:30

The left is trying to destroy women’s rights, the family, society.

There are perverted views on what children can consent to. Thank GOD Britain is so far rejecting that in the polling booth.

I think this is overstated and a perspective that's 20 years out of date. The right do indeed dominate the print media, but this is far less important than it was. How many people buy a daily paper now? As for tv media, news remains dominated by the BBC, which isn't a right wing mouthpiece. Social media seems to be something the left make use of, but it's campaigns seem to be a mixture of sanctimonious virtue signalling and embittered rants, magnified by the confines of the echo-chamber - precious little vision.
Miseryl · 03/10/2021 08:12

USA left wing? Hahahhahaha!

PermanentTemporary · 03/10/2021 08:16

Few people buy a print paper but those who do, vote.

Crankyoldboiler · 03/10/2021 08:34

@Chicchicchicchiclana

No woman who cares about women's rights can vote Labour atm.
And Labour have just firmly entrenched the view of themselves as anti women in the public mind by their conference antics - Keir Starmer saying on the BBC that "it should not be said that women have cervixes", David Lammy that we are "rights hoarding dinosaurs" for being unwilling to admit biological males to women's safe spaces, booing and silencing the woman who spoke in defence of Rosie Duffield who has had death threats for speaking out and now, the hypocrisy of the hand ringing about violence against women. I expect it has peaked a lot of people and will be very hard for Labour to undo the damage when they finally wake up.
fournonblondes · 03/10/2021 09:17

I think the current Democrats under Biden are to the Left of the labour party (or equally as left wing) Biden is bat crazy , Alexandra Ocasio Cortez is to the left of everyone including Corbyn ! The quite incredible nonsense coming from the USA , where Biden made Johnson look like a World leader in comparison . Biden handlers would not let him answer any questions. The only words Biden speak is 'Come on Man'.

This

As well as anti Semitic.

FanGirlX · 03/10/2021 09:35

@Miseryl

USA left wing? Hahahhahaha!
It's that free at the point of service, universal healthcare that does it.
adagio · 03/10/2021 09:38

Great thread - really insightful

Why do you believe Labour are anti-semitic?
User135644 · 10/10/2021 15:12

Generational divide. Under 40s voted Corbyn by a huge majority (and to remain in EU).

The older generations are conservative.

MintJulia · 10/10/2021 15:19

Can you honestly see Labour forming a government? Or running a country? There'd be leadership battles and union in-fighting within weeks. Momentum sticking the boot in.

The reason we haven't voted left, and believe me I would have liked the option, is there is no credible left !

User135644 · 10/10/2021 16:07

I'm not a Labour fan either but the Tories destroy everything they touch. Why are they always preferable than anything left of centre? Even Blair was a centrist (as was Major and Cameron).

Ibelieveinghosts · 15/10/2021 17:38

Because far left is just as dangerous as far right, people know this, atm the right are far more central than the left with some fairly extremist ideology esp towards women and Jews. We need a shift in government, but we currently only have one horse in the race that most people can back.

Fifteentoes · 15/10/2021 19:26

You seriously think Keir Starmer and his shadow cabinet are far left extremists?

XingMing · 26/10/2021 14:04

MatildaIthink has nailed it for me. None of the major parties holds enough appeal for the small c centrist.

MarshaBradyo · 26/10/2021 14:06

Cons are shifting to centre in terms of spending

Labour are losing ground

madisonbridges · 26/10/2021 14:08

@MeAndDebbieMcGee

The English never had a revolution. They're not really left wing the same way other people are. Even when they rebel, they still keep public schools, monarchy, politicians from the upper class etc. There's still an element of deference. They just get a bit sulky and boorish. But they don't overthrow.
I think Charles I might disagree with you.

Don't really think other countries are moving left - populism and nationalism are on the rise across Europe.
