Surely these departures are a sign of how nasty this country has grown and how unpleasant our society has become. Who are these nasty bits of work who send threatening, abusive messages to MPs. Are they far right/far left? The several Parliamentarians mentioned (mainly women) are all long serving members with lots of experience. I saw Jess Phillips describing the horrors happening to them. It’s a sign of the times and Brexit has caused it. Threats to them and their families are intolerable and a sign that Fascism is gaining traction in our lovely, tolerant country.

Amber Rudd is leaving because she will lose her seat at the election anyway. I can't have any sympathy for someone who willfully inflicted hurt on so many women during her time as SoS for Work and Pensions.

It's not mainly women stepping down if you look at the full list. I'd look at the reality of their situations rather than the reasons they claim.

Rats leaving the sinking ship really. Lots of MPs know that they've no chance of re-election so are avoiding the embarrassment of losing their seats.

FATEdestiny · 31/10/2019 10:37

I think that the average work/life balance for an MP has been good. Currently it isn't and it doesn't look to change in the next few years, so some are leaving.

FATEdestiny · 31/10/2019 10:38

... has previously been good...

If you talk to any MP or remotely understood what they do you would know the work life balance is awful and it’s always been the case. The threats MPs get are intolerable and we have to accept they are voted in on a manifesto that you might not like. That doesn’t mean they can be repeatedly threatened. Many can no longer have an open door surgery policy because they need security arrangements.

The culprits are far left and far right. More need tracking down and firm action taken. Many MPs travel miles and miles to be in their constituencies when based at Westminster and I believe they work all hours for us. They attend Committees in the House, parliament itself, have to read tons of literature, speak to constituents, write responses and lots more. It’s utterly full on. David Lidington is one who wants to actually see his family and he doesn’t live far from London.

We should not accept a vitriolic and angry election. Rhetoric needs to be toned down. Johnson is already blaming Parliament for him not getting agreement to his Brexit. How predictable. But this rubbish is lapped up. The fact that we have so many differing opinions in Parliament is the problem. Not Parliament itself. If anyone doesn’t think we need a Parliament, we are on the way to a Dictatorship. A Boris and Dominic one probably.

Email makes it much easier for a certain type of person to send hateful abusive messages to those whose tribe, behaviour or actions they don't approve of. They probably think they're being clever and funny but have no idea of the impact such abuse can have on the recipient. They probably don't give a shit either. Until you've received a bunch of these horrible messages, I'm not sure you can appreciate their cumulative impact. I was horrified when my brother told me yesterday that he'd sent one to a male MP.
My own personal experience is that they all come from men. I did call one out on his behaviour as I happened to know his wife and children and had minded their dog a couple of times for them, so I thought I'd helpfully point that out to him. He came back all charm personified the stupid prat. Still, since then his wife has kicked him out and divorced him and then she promptly inherited a huge amount of money so he must be very bitter now poor man Grin

I'm not surprised they're leaving, life's too short to put up with that kind of stuff.

It’s no surprise at all that Rudd and Heidi Allen are going. The former represents an ultra-marginal seat and won’t be allowed to stand as a Tory. Allen represents a safe Tory Seat, and has no chance of winning it for the Lib Dems.

Morgan is different. She has worked hard to create a decent majority in Loughborough, which is a natural marginal, and she has been a very good, popular and visible constituency MP. She probably has just had enough of the crap.

Unbelievably sad. Our poor country. To top it all we are presented with a Farage phone in by Trump. Interfering with our election and so blatant. It was bad enough when Johnson was running for the leadership so what is our untrustworthy PM cooking up with him? I despair. If only Corbyn would depart and make way for a credible alternative.

I can't say i blame some of them.

I am no great lover of any politician but the amount and nature of the abuse being directed at them by large numbers of the public is both shocking and a damning insight into the current state of things in the UK.

The language used by some Politicians and in particular the tabloid press has not helped. The PM also has to shoulder some of the blame, by playing to some of the crazier people in his "audience" and using words like the surrender act, this is then used by some mindless individuals to start portraying the UK and EU being at war. Thus anybody who is not on the UK's side as they see it is a traitor.

Every election we get people interfering, Trade Union leaders, clergymen, the CBI.
