Last thing they need is a divisive leadership contest right now, that makes transparent how clueless all of the supposed leadership candidates are about how to break the Brexit impasse.

If Conservatives want to make themselves look completely incompetent in government, leadership contest right now is best way to do it.

You are correct as far as I can see. The problem appears to be the lack of agreement within the party. As for the self seeking contenders who wish to replace her their inadequacies are so apparent that it beggars belief they would improve the situation.

Good listen to Geoffrey something MP (Treasurer of 1922 committee Y do they need a treasurer? on PM programme this evening (Radio4, about 10 past 5pm).

Few things I got out of that:
The MP said that he was moved to think May had to quit being PM b/c of "angry" people. She should go due to emotions. Not logic, not strategy, not evidence, but rather "anger" should decide.

The MP predicted that many far right MEPs would be elected, including from Britain, and the mere fact of this would compel EU to reopen negotiations with UK about Irish protocol. A new & more 'flexible' Prime minister would be able to capitalise on the EU's revised position to get a deal that majority Parliament will support.

I don't agree that any of that will happen, but at least I have better understanding Y Tories believe new PM will change anything.

Evan Davis sounded about as convinced as I am.

I think that it would take someone downright extraordinary to salvage that shot show.

And yet there is no remotely credible alternative.

So it's known shitshow or unknown shitshow.

Redcar & Cleveland voted very strongly (66%) for Brexit.
2019 local elections, 0.64% of ballots were spoilt.
Labour got butts kicked & Indies surged ahead in 2019 local elections.
But I'm still not sure if that translates into "We're gonna vote far right & for Brexit party on 23 May".

I guess we shall see.
