Exactly that, I really need to understand why a hard border would damage Ireland if checks were made. I imagine that in this day and age there would be technical advancement to speed things through. Also, forgive my lack of understanding, why should it revive all the horrors of the violence of the past? Please, all you more enlightened mumsnetters, can you explain?.

Violence.

It won’t necessarily lead to violence but the Good Friday Agreement is a legal treaty. It cannot be overridden unilaterally without provocation. The uk should not unilaterally break treaties. We look like a failed state if we do.

The hard border arises because we won’t be EU but Eire will be. There is no trade deal between the two so customs would need to be imposed. But where? The border is porous and there are no official border posts and crossing points. Neither NI or Eire wants this and technology doesn’t help with this as there are no main crossing points or infrastructure. The status quo is infinitely preferable.

@bumbles
States can and do unilaterally withdraw from treaties, and do not have to justify this. The right to do so has been enshrined in international law for almost 50 years.
The answer, as bellinisurge says, is the violence the presence of any border infrastructure would precipitate. This is what, perversely, makes a hard border unlikely in any situation imo. Neither the British, Irish, or EU authorities want to be the ones to go stand on the border (only to be knee-capped).

Just seen this thread. I understand about why there would need to be a border in terms of one side's EU and the other side isn't, customs etc. What I don't undertand is why there would be a eturn to violence. Why? We all understand about customs etc, why would it lead to violence?
