Election night: Do you stay up for the results to come in?

No party politics/ campaigning / swearing/ ranting please.... just answers to a straightforward question

  • - -

DH & I tend to stay up until about 2 am with some cheese & biscuits /fruit and wine to see which direction it's heading.

It's fun when you have those 'were you up for Portillo?' moments...

What do you do?

Stay up but I'm abroad and big time difference I'm getting up at 4am, 10pm at home instead. I'm super excited and upset not to be at home. But worried I'll miss this with only radio to resort to!!

steppemum · 08/06/2017 15:58

I usually stay up. What actually happens is that I fall asleep for a couple of hours, and then wake up. Usually just as something important is happening, so my subconscious brain is obvioulsy listening!

I don't always, but when it is an impotant one, or very hard to call, I do. I wait to see some of those key seats come in. I disctinctly remember the presenters being totally thrown by a couple of unexpected results and the rest was history. Never stay til the end, once those key swing seats are in, it is enough. Usually about 3 am.

CleopatraTheCatLover · 08/06/2017 18:07

I'm working the night shift so will check in on my breaks.

Wingbing · 08/06/2017 18:20

I'm going to get up early and enjoy my first coffee in my new machine at the same time.

Rather looking forward to it.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 08/06/2017 19:23

I try to usually stay up until 2ish then set the alarm for 430

I stayed up for the referendum

AuntieStella · 08/06/2017 19:26

Telly in the bedroom, mix of dozing and watching.

DH had a hideously early start for work this morning, so he'll want to be asleep though. I'll have to have it on quietly.

Sittinginthesun · 08/06/2017 19:29

I stayed up in 1992, which was depressing. Houseful of depressed students, all piled up on the tiny sofa.

I'd love to stay up tonight, but I am working tomorrow and was late to bed last night so not sure how long I'll hang on.

namechangingagainagain · 08/06/2017 19:33

I stayed up for the referendum. I smoked so many fags and drank a fair amount of red wine that night.
Might stay up tonight but i no longer smoke and don't know how i will get through it.

chipsandpeas · 08/06/2017 19:38

i ususally do for elections but cant tonight as i couldnt get tomorrow off work, so planning on heading to bed soon and get up about half 4

AnnieAnoniMouse · 08/06/2017 19:39

Yes. I love it. Referendums, Elections etc.

I don't sleep much anyway, so it doesn't affect me badly.

I hope there's a non argumentative thread running.

Dawnedlightly · 08/06/2017 19:41

I have a billion things to do tomorrow. If the exit polls look hopeful though I'll stay up or listen in bed.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 08/06/2017 19:43

I'm on nights tonight. My team are aware the telly will be remaining on BBC throughout the night.

Vango · 08/06/2017 19:45

Yes, always. Usually nod off from time to time and jolt awake when something exciting happens. Generally hang on until the result becomes more predictable. Have booked tomorrow off, either to wallow in misery or join in the celebrations!

clearingaspaceforthecat · 08/06/2017 19:47

Yes, always stay up. Book the Friday off work as soon as the date is announced!

LottieandMia · 08/06/2017 19:48

Tonight I most definitely won't. I think it will be bad news. I've voted that's all I can do :(

Vango · 08/06/2017 19:48

What do you do?

Have just been to the supermarket to stock up on drinks/nibbles/sugary stuff!

Believeitornot · 08/06/2017 19:52

I'm staying up but I know it'll be depressing.

I kept an eye on the 2010 election because ds was a non sleeping baby so was awake sporadically.

I have to say that was depressing thinking I'd just brought a child into the world under a Tory government.

So I'll be equally as gloomy tonight

Onceafortnight · 08/06/2017 19:54

I stay up as long as I can or until you get a sense of which way it is heading. I won't this year. I can't get any excitement about it.

FloralTribute · 08/06/2017 19:55

No. We did for the Brexit referendum and Trump's election, so we clearly jinx things.

Eolian · 08/06/2017 19:59

Not a chance. Not because I'm not bothered by the result - I very much am. But I go to bed at 10.30 even at the weekend ! Why feel crap all day tomorrow by staying up to find out something I'll find out anyway when I wake up?

OublietteBravo · 08/06/2017 20:01

No. I'll see what the exit poll says and then go to bed. I might check to see what is happening around 4am though.

annandale · 08/06/2017 20:02

Probably not this time, exit poll and bed.

But if the poll is inconclusive it will be very tempting. We live in an alleged .marginal so will be very keen to know about that - I;bet there is a recount.

Like the sound of a non argumentative thread but will probably end up on the Westminstenders one

LuxuryWoman2017 · 08/06/2017 20:02

I won't stay up to watch the television but will have the radio on through the night.

muminthecity · 08/06/2017 20:09

I never have before, but I will stay up tonight as I have the day off tomorrow (coincidence, not planned!) As soon as it starts looking like a Tory landslide I'll head miserably to bed.

ifonly4 · 08/06/2017 20:26

We normally stay up until 11.30/midnight. I usually wake up in the night, so pop downstairs to check what's happening. Last night it was around 4am and results were coming in fast so I ended up staying up.
