Diane Abbott taking a break from campaign

I am not surprised. Actually thought she looked close to a nervous breakdown on recent appearances.
She has been absolutely hounded and vilified since that LBC interview with the police funding and her own party have not done much to support her.
I feel sorry for her and hope the rest does her good

I am a Labour supporter but had big concerns re Diane Abbott. She's not been right for a while.
This decision is for the best, I hope she gets well soon.

PortiaCastis · 07/06/2017 09:37

I hope she's not seriously ill but even if she is the tories will still put the boot in.

LapinR0se · 07/06/2017 09:40

I don't think the Tories will do anything of the sort
Disclaimer: Tory supporter

She won't be replaced as a Parliamentary candidate, I'd think it's too late for that. But she won't be Home Secretary in a theoretical incoming Labour government. You could stay on as an MP even if ill and have it supported / managed: Thangam Debonnaire took time off for cancer treatment IIRC. But a major cabinet job is a bit different.

Butterymuffin · 07/06/2017 09:56

So wish Yvette Cooper were able to take over as Shadow HS. She genuinely scares May.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/06/2017 10:25

If she really is unwell then I feel sorry for her, but OTOH IMO she should have had had the sense to step down before now when she surely must have realised that she wasn't coping. Unless of course it's a case of early onset dementia - for her sake I sincerely hope not.

Interesting the double standards on here.

I'm sure any Tory in the precisely the same circs would have attracted 95% poison and 5% sympathy - if she/he were lucky. ,

An interesting voting record. She doesn't seem a total ally of Corbyn, consistent voting pattern in some areas, all over the shop in others.

HappydaysArehere · 07/06/2017 11:32

If she was being replaced by Ed Balls or Yvette Cooper I would vote Labour once more but Lynn someone - no. Not good enough so against everything I have always believed in its still Theresa, even tho Boris is there in amongst them.

Ankleswingers · 07/06/2017 18:59

She is only standing down temporarily though according to reports....

Ineedacupofteadesperately · 07/06/2017 19:07

Interesting blog by Jack Munroe cookingonabootstrap.com/2017/06/07/we-need-to-talk-about-diane-abbott-now-explicit-content/

I'm not a great fan of Diane Abbott's -she always seems a bit smug to me, however I was recently unlucky enough to see some of the abusive tweets about her and honestly it turned my stomach. If that's the sort of thing she has to put up with then I admire her for sticking around to be honest.

Great article here

If she was being replaced by Ed Balls or Yvette Cooper I would vote Labour once more but Lynn someone - no.

If Jeremy announced tonight that Yvette would be HS, Hilary Benn the FS and Rachel Reeves the Chancellor he would win the election tomorrow.

mummysmellsofsick · 07/06/2017 19:21

Above link was helpful for me, I am dismayed by her recent interviews and didn't know much about her history

dadap · 07/06/2017 19:38

Chardonnay
She's not running for Head Of PTA in Little Winston's primary, she's running for an MP and she is/was shadow secretary. There are some standards, even for her.

Yes I got your little dig ... even if not many Mumsnetters would. Also She obviously has passion for what she does and tried to go on for as long as she could - and clearly to the detriment of her own health and career. She has given many a voice and No she isn't perfect but then who is - If she does leave politics now - I would hope she would be remembered at mostly her best and not just these recent weeks - You sound lovely - let's hope neither you nor any of your family find yourself in a similar situation.

Alfieisnoisy · 07/06/2017 19:44

I think she's wanted to push on despite ill health.
I don't know what is wrong with her but we need to remember Mo Mowlam did the same and thank goodness she did as she achieved so much.

Let's hope it's not anything as serious for Diane Abbott.

Alfieisnoisy · 07/06/2017 19:50

And I don't always agree with Jack Monroe but I think she pretty much nails it with that blog post.

PortiaCastis · 07/06/2017 19:51

The abuse Diane received on Twatter is absolutely appalling, there's disgusting racism sexism body shaming sexual suggestive abuse , you name it she got it and nobody deserves that sort of keyboard warrior cowardly shite.

gamerwidow · 07/06/2017 19:58

I hope people can leave her alone to get better. Whatever you think about her performance in the election she deserves the chance to recover from her illness in private,

AuldHeathen · 07/06/2017 22:18

I suspect she's got a mental health problem. Only going from what I've seen/heard in the media, no inside info. It is very common, especially in ambitious people, for a person with something like depression to try to keep going, you know, thinking 'if only I get a good sleep, study that article, it will go better tomorrow'. One of the things that goes with depression is the ability to see what's really happening. The poor woman has had much more vitriol directed at her, throughout her career, than many a white, male person and of course it's got much worse recently. I hope she's getting all the help and support she needs.
