AIBU to wonder if a bigger Tory majority might not be such a bad thing..

Just to be clear I'm not a Tory and historically have voted Lib Dem / Labour - depending on the candidate. Probably I would describe myself as Centre Left.
Although I like the sound of Corbyn's promises and find his approach on the debates refreshing - I'm really not convinced of his ability to be PM nor that of the current shadow cabinet. I also am concerned about Corbyn's ability to negotiate a Brexit deal.
I've found Theresa May's performance at the debates to be fairly uninspiring. However I actually thought a lot of the manifesto was quite good - if you take it at face value it seemed to indicate a bit of a sea change in Tory policy, i.e. a greater focus on the public good rather than bending to the untrammelled will of the markets.
I thought the social care idea was a brave step in tackling a real issue and was fundamentally about sharing wealth - which seemed a very unTory like idea. I also like the fact that the Tories are not committing to the hugely expensive Triple Lock which again seems to show they are no longer blindly pandering to the Over 60s at the expense of the young.
So I wondered if TM really wants to move the party more to the left and a bigger majority would allow her to do this.
It might also allow to get a saner version of Brexit rather than having to pander to the extremists in the party at present.
I will probably get flamed for this but I also wondered that whether growing up as a vicar's daughter, TM might have been put in contact with many different sides of society and might be less devoid of compassion than her predecessors.
But am I being hopelessly naive?

She's right of Cameron in her politics. I can't see her taking the party to the left.

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 03/06/2017 13:05

BIL said the same about TM may want to move further to the left

But i think they have moved further right

And i am not voting for them in the 'hope' that they go left

If they were going left now...i would probably be more tempted to vote for them now and i am pretty centrist

A bigger majority will be a disaster for the weakest members of our society - it will be good if you are rich but not if you are poor, sick, old, in education, in hospital - the list is endless. Vote Tory fir the few vote Labour for the many

guinea36 · 03/06/2017 13:10

Leanback - In what way is she to the right of Cameron? Genuine question.

Hello all, we're just moving this thread over to our politics board.

scottishdiem · 03/06/2017 13:20

She is harder on immigration (she even hates foreign students who pay full fees).
She is pro-grammar school (standard right wing wet dream).
Even greater dislike of paying public sector workers a decent salary than Cameron had (right wing position of state shouldnt employ people).
Sought to privatise aspects of policing (and now trying that in other departments).
Social care reductions (state shouldnt care for people, right wingers want families to care for their own as its their own fault for not earning enough for a private nurse etc.)
Scrapping free school meals (who cares if poor children cant eat)
Bringing fox hunting back (can you think of a more right wing thing that dressing up, ride with a pack of hounds and delight in an animal getting ripped to shreds).

etc.

guinea36 · 03/06/2017 13:26

Becky - why?
I posted here for a reason. What's wrong with posting here?

"I will probably get flamed for this but I also wondered that whether growing up as a vicar's daughter, TM might have been put in contact with many different sides of society and might be less devoid of compassion than her predecessors."

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Ahem.

The other day she was delighted to attend the Jesus House Church led by Pastor Agu Irukwu. His church has been involved in exorcisms of gay people in the belief that they are possessed by demons. It's parent church in Nigeria backed the draconian anti-laws passed in 2014, which are some of the harshest in the world. Jesus House preaches against the human rights of LGBT people in the UK and Africa.

And ask any victim of her Home Office policies about her compassion.

BrexitSucks · 03/06/2017 18:37

I don't want any Brexit much less the hard Brexit that TM has adopted as opening position. So no, big majority is not good. The Tories need to accept compromise as political reality.

Greenifer · 03/06/2017 20:55

This is a really interesting article from a former British ambassador who has been involved with high level international negotiations which gives his take on May's negotiating abilities:

Mum2jenny · 03/06/2017 20:58

I want whoever wins to have a huge majority, partly so there won't be another general election for 5 years , and partly so the issues with Brexit get totally sorted.

I will be voting strategically in my area.

GraceGrape · 03/06/2017 21:03

I would like them to win a minority government. That way they have to take the blame for all the crap of the Brexit disaster that they orchestrated, but hopefully won't be able to get any of their crappy NHS, education or welfare policies passed. Then we can set up a decent government after the next election.

QuiteLikely5 · 03/06/2017 21:09

There is no way on this earth that Labour will win this election. It's interesting how the media has taken to promoting them - perhaps Rupert has not taken very well to Ms May and I can see his puppets at work through his media organisations, similarly his organisations enjoyed ridiculing Milliband.

QuiteLikely5 · 03/06/2017 21:10

He's obviously decided he likes Jeremy

DarkFloodRises · 03/06/2017 21:11

OP - TM's voting record definitely puts her to the right of DC.

christinarossetti · 03/06/2017 21:38

Ask the victims of the 140 MPs whose files implicating them in child abuse she 'lost' about her compassion.

LouiseBrooks · 03/06/2017 21:40

No offence OP but I think your TM only exists in your dreams. She is quick to remind us she's a vicar's daughter when it suits her but I haven't seen her show any compassion towards those affected by Tory policies.

A big Tory majority will be a disaster for the most vulnerable in our society and not much good for what she calls"the just managing". I see nothing coming from her to suggest she is going to do anything to help those people.

I also think huge majorities are bad in principle as the winners then think they can implement their most extreme policies.

Mum2jenny · 03/06/2017 21:45

quitelikely how do you know that labour won't win?
At this stage, there are no guarantees who will win

Takeittotheboss · 06/06/2017 21:47

TM was brought up in a tiny select wealthy Oxfordshire village, so no she didn't get exposed to any vast expanse of society. And she comes across as having made sure that she has remained in that right-wing upper middle class bubble ever since.

Theworldisfullofidiots · 06/06/2017 21:53

TM moving to the left.......
That's like saying Gove is a sex god.
