Is Britain a democracy?

Just that. If we are, what makes us one? If you don't think we are a democracy, what countries do you consider a democracy?

Id say we were better than a lot of countries. But we could be better still. However I live in Scotland and am constantly being told how its a one party state and Im a brainwashed voter so what would i know Hmm

I think yes, we're a democracy, but there are certainly improvements to be made, mainly ditching the Lords.

Lots of improvements to make in politics in general as well of course (more transparency, less London-centric) but those faults don't make Britain undemocratic. It just means that the politicians who were voted in aren't doing the job as well as they should.

In an ideal nation I'd like there to be no "behind the scenes" scheming, financial incentives and string-pulling. Unfortunately that's unlikely because power and influence will always be something the corrupt will want, as well as decent people who go into politics for the right reasons. Even the best democracy can only be as good as human nature. The best we can do is choose wisely - but isn't that what we all do already when we vote?
