So what is the Chilcot report and what are its implications?

It's been investigating the Iraq war and it's going to say Tony should't have started it, is that right?

But Tony is no longer an MP and it's all a decade ago. So what exactly is going to happen as a result?

There is speculation that Blair and several other Labour MPs could be indicted for war crimes.
(Hence all the cabinet resignations in the last 7 days)

zabuzabu · 04/07/2016 04:29

Ah!

I thought indictment could only happen in the USA

Except that the ICC have said that it is outside its remit to investigate the decision to invade so it's focus is actually possible abuse by the troops rather than those who gave the orders. They don't call Blair Teflon Tony for nothing Angry

Asprilla11 · 04/07/2016 04:44

I believe Jeremy Corbyn is waiting for this before agreeing to step down, he wants to have his say in Westminster and possibly call Blair a war criminal.

It is an important report because most of the MP's, from all parties, voted yes to the war based on the truthfullness of Blair and his all allies reports on WMD's, if those reports were false then MP's were duped in to voting yes, as was the public who decided it was for the best.

zabuzabu · 04/07/2016 06:37

Ok, thanks for explaining!

so some of the Labour MPs who resigned recently are connected to this? (reading 99percentchocolate's post)

mamamea · 06/07/2016 12:35

It says that Blair is an evil warmongering shitstain cunt who would burn in hell.

Auti · 06/07/2016 13:07

It's a sad irony so few have commented on Chilcot so far.

I marched with 2 million others on the Stop the War march in London, February 15th 2003.

By the time I had found my coach home on Park Lane, B'Lair was on the radio downplaying and dismissing the March, a month later the invasion of Iraq began.

Now from the Chilcot report its clear...
''On 28 July 2002, the then Prime Minister Tony Blair assured US President George W Bush he would be with him "whatever".''

As of October 2006, The Lancet '' estimated 654,965 excess deaths related to the war, or 2.5% of the population

Lord knows how many have been killed in the 10 years since. Only this week Iraq waw worst bombing since invasion with 250 deaths

Iraq's agony continues. But worse it has spread to Syria and on and on to the myriad of terrorist attacks which were born of the illegal invasion of Iraq.

What B'Lair and Bush did is very much alive today.

It is good the truth finally came out, still I just feel horribly sad at how unnecessary it all was.

Have been looking for threads on this - I expected loads tbh.

Tony Blair is still in arrogant denial.

Sad, sad, sad outcome yet not at all a shock.

Hundreds of thousands dead and injured, millions of lives ruined, our own servicemen & women betrayed - and all for his ego.

Oblomov16 · 06/07/2016 13:51

Hardly surprising. The report doesn't go far enough in its criticisms (ie Blair) and Blair is still denying everything.
What a waste of time and money. How long did we wait for this?

Atlas15 · 06/07/2016 13:59

I really hate the fact they most media stations are only reporting the deaths of UK solidiers and are barely mentioning the hundreds of thousands of Iraqi deaths.
How is Blair not a war criminal?
This is getting downplayed too much it cannot be written off as a mistake. I grew up listening to weapons of mass destruction constantly being pounded out by the news and the fear and scaremongering that it created. And now we have Syria and Isis, it's the same story different name. Keeping people in a constant state of fear so that they can be excused for what ever they do.

Yes

MrsHathaway · 06/07/2016 14:11

"I will take full responsibility for any mistakes without exception or excuse."

Yeah, of course you will, Mr Blair.

MrsHathaway · 06/07/2016 14:12

WAIT, SHIT.

I've just realised.

It wasn't a mistake.

Luckystar1 · 06/07/2016 14:17

I read on a thread once about a year or two ago that Blair is caught up in some pretty dodgey shit in the Middle East and is close to getting his comeuppance. Have no idea as to the truth of that statement but it will be interesting to see what the report says and whether this precipitates any 'action'.

kirinm · 06/07/2016 14:21

So now this report makes clear Tony Blair knew going to war in Iraq would increase terrorism (which it did) and it would destabilise the Middle East (which it has) do we finally get public support for taking refugees displaced by war and terrorism in or is that still not our problem? Hmm

derxa · 06/07/2016 14:29

Blair is on TV now justifying everything.

redshoeblueshoe · 06/07/2016 14:30

Who gave Chilcott his Honours ?
oh yeah Tony B.
No-one will sanction him being charged. He had an advanced copy, and I'm sure he's had his legal team all over it for ages.
Now he wants to be a Brexit negotiater.

mamamea · 06/07/2016 14:31

His wife is also an evil piece of shit, friends of murderers, torturers and despots the world over.

derxa · 06/07/2016 14:32

He is completely without conscience.

MangoMoon · 06/07/2016 14:32

He's all choked up - glistening eyes threatening tears at any moment.

He's so fake & stage managed.

FellOutOfBed2wice · 06/07/2016 14:34

Place marking as want to understand more about this.

MangoMoon · 06/07/2016 14:35

"It was the UN which was at fault".....

Aaah - ok then Tone....

redshoeblueshoe · 06/07/2016 14:39

I'm torn - do I carry on watching, or go and puke up.
mamaea - I totally agree.
