Do prisoners still have SKY telivision?

Remember hearing there was a plan to change this but I am unaware of any follow up. Cameron must of felt as though he was walking a tight rope on this one; on the one hand as a Tory he has to be tough on crime and also reassure the tax-payer money is not spent on frivolous niceties for wrong-uns, but at the same time he must appease Murdoch.

It would not bother me if well behaved compliant prisoners were rewarded with Sky TV. The cost of a sky box is peanuts compared with the cost of using punishments to regulate prisoner's behaviour.

Maybe we need better research on how to re habilate prisoners and get them to see that good behaviour leads to a positive and productive life. I been a victim of a serious crime for which the criminal was sent to jail for 4 months. The criminal is also serving a cocurrent sentence for grieveous bodily harm. At this moment in time he is a serious fckd up person and not safe to walk the streets. He will be out in August 2016 at the earliest possible oppotunity.

If the a criminal is bribed with Sky TV to make the effort to learn to read, engage with councelling or anger management then prehaps there rates of reoffendning will fall. I feel that revenge for what happened to me would be pointless. As a victim I would like the human being who abused me to treated like a human so he can learn to act like a human.

Most of us have little experience of prisons or the justice system unless we are unlucky enough to be a victim. I suppose it could be argued that many disgraced tory politicans could give good insights on how to improve the prison system.

Do those with children 'in poverty' and using Food Banks have Sky TV?

Best Cameron looks into that first to try and get those children fed properly, rather than worry more about serving prisoners who probably got the vote supported by Labour MPs.

P.S. It was Labour who had a PM who got VERY close to the Murdock family (even caused a divorce?), and it was the Brown's who had Murdock family sleepovers at #11 - until Murdock woke up to Labour's policies, and diched them to a brown hissy fit.

"Do those with children 'in poverty' and using Food Banks have Sky TV?"

Trust me, "those children in poverty" would be safer if criminals are better rehabilatated. Entertainment options are very limited in prison. Sky TV for a group of well behaved prisoners who are complying with rehabilation is not that expensive.

The question is should Sky TV or indeed education be available for lifers who have commited such a heinous crime that it has been decided that they should never be realised. Or is it better to treat likes of Ian Huntley or Ian Bradey as humans even if they have not acted like humans.

ReallyTired · 26/09/2015 11:21

Sorry I mean lifers who will never be released.

Prehaps our mumsnetters should allow prison/ parole officers some control and attomony over their budgets. Its all very well people remote from the prison systme making decisions, but they don't have implement them.

Capital Punishment rather than withdrawing 'Game of Throne' rights, would sort THAT 'heinous" debate out.

But not for today.

sugar21 · 26/09/2015 11:23

Nothing to add but I'm sure someone who works for the prison service will be posting soon to tell us the truth about these matters.
Also I know someone who claims benefits etc etc and has Sky TV, but her parents pay for her TV as well as phones. All is not always as it seems !

MuddlingThrew · 26/09/2015 11:26

By 'woke up to Labour's policies' do you mean saw there was a chance they might not win.? It's confusing when you say things like that because some people might think you mean Murdoch has honour.

I see Conservative Party central office is working weekends.

In 2016 Sky will release a documentary that will really show how Sky TV is used in prisons.

sugar Grin
Perhaps I'll start a thread, 'do cleaners still pay more tax than managing partners?'
In answer to your question OP: as if you cared
Some private prisons negotiated deals which included sky news and sports as part of the free view package- the cost was born by the inmates. No prisoner in state run prisons ever did and all prisoners 'earn' the right to a TV through good behaviour and engaging in 'meaningful activities' such as education, training, wing cleaning.

HugoBear · 26/09/2015 13:29

I sometimes wonder if those who state that you only need punishment to modify behaviour raise their children according to the same principle.

I'm pretty sure they don't.

MuddlingThrew · 26/09/2015 13:29

sugar

'-as if you cared-'

I can't say it was massively massively important but I just was pondering about it so posted the question. What ever I learn through people answering will probably not be a water shed moment but I'd still geniuenly like to know.

Why does it bother people prisoners having access to Sky? Having freedom is far more valuable than Sky? I feel that a mixture of carrot and stick essential for reforming someone. Even lifers become easier to manage if they have some level of rehabilitation.

It might seem bleeding hearts, but many criminals were badly let down as children. A lot of criminals were ex care leavers, got excluded from school, have special needs or have learning difficulties. No newborn baby is fundermentally evil and something has to go wrong to make someone a criminal.

Do I want the criminal who hurt me to suffer. Believe it or not, I don't. I want him to be reformed and become useful in society.

megletthesecond · 26/09/2015 13:50

sugar I skip it, bit like whizzing past adverts.

MuddlingThrew · 26/09/2015 13:53

Reallytired- its not just a question of wanting prisoners to suffer. Cameron is all about 'hard working families' and money to pay for sky could make things easier for them. But at the same time Murdoch owns both Cameron and Sky so it might be a bit of a tricky minefield for PM.

Sky has huge profits. I doubt they really care if prisoners get sky sports or not.
