Have posted on a thread about this but thought it deserved its own thread.
Corbyn I liked him anyway but this is achieved within days of being appointed and is the first leader ever to create this role.

Invented a new post to put another woman in after criticism. Still it will be interesting to see the remit and how it interfaces with the shadow for health.

About time.
Well done JC.

He's also appointed a vegan activist to deal with farmers and agriculture.

Yes, really.

Hmm
YonicScrewdriver · 15/09/2015 07:13

I think the post is a good idea.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 15/09/2015 07:39

It's a great idea and much needed.

Tory appointments which are ludicrous

Equality minister who voted against gay marriage

Disabled minister who voted against protecting disabled benefits for children and cancer patients.

Clearly Corbyn realises that there will be yet more demand on overstretched services, as he'll send most of the country 'over the edge'.

We should not need a dedicated minister for mental health within an NHS ministry, and more than we need a Diet or Anti Alcohol minister which arguably is just as important an issue in today's society - but as there does appear to STILL need more money/resources within mental health - extra pressure on the government could help.

Has it been touted as a 'temp' appointment, where once our mental health services are deemed as adequate as all the others, it will no longer exist?

Isitmebut · 15/09/2015 08:42

P.S. Re IDS and any Tory ministers, if Labour had left ANY government department 'fit for purpose' or any money left to address the UK's problems, there wouldn't have needed to be major reforms to sort it.

Re Equality - did Cameron do anything via legislation on gay rights the Labour Party never addressed?

Re the "disabled minister", show how he specifically targeted disabled benefits for children and cancer patients.

On 1 Feb 2012:
Justin Tomlinson voted not to make an exception for those with a cancer diagnosis or undergoing cancer treatment from the 365 day limit on receiving contribution based Employment and Support Allowance.

Although I disagree with the Mirror and their content on a regular basis based on the 'facts' they present, I will take this on face value - in which case that is totally out of order - as although I don't think an MP has to be poor to understand the problems of the poor, being disabled has to give an MP a better insight into that area.

So I will agree with you on that, as historically the Conservative's have never been shy in voting against party policies e.g. Europe, so no excuse whatsoever.

We should not need a dedicated minister for mental health within an NHS ministry

Mental health has been shamefully neglected and the numbers affected underreported. And people are living longer and more likely to be affected by alzheimers, Parkinsons or other degenerative disorders before they die.

BreakWindAndFire if you finished my quote I generally agree with you on the general issue of mental health, but when it comes to the likes of dementia, I have no idea what was does during the nice decade from 1997 to 2007 when we had £billions to spend, but since 2010 Cameron has tried to take a lead on trying to find a cure, together with other major countries in the world.

Government pledges £300m on dementia research

G8 'will develop dementia cure or treatment by 2025'
www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-25318194

Leading nations have committed to developing a cure or treatment for dementia by 2025 at the G8 dementia summit.

Health ministers meeting in London said it was a "big ambition" and that they would significantly increase funding for research to meet that goal.

The UK has already said it aims to double its annual research funding to £132m by 2025.

I tend to take a general interest in this subject as within our family, while our hearts tend to be near bullet-proof, from our mid 80's our minds tend to w-a-n-d-e-r more than they should and every day becomes a new adventure.
