I was thinking that despite his popularity he won't win as is he is unlikely to get more than 50% of first preference votes and won't pick up very many 2nd preferences.

I think of myself as on the left and have much sympathy with many of Corbyn's views. But if he wins it will destroy the party. It would be fascinating to watch, but only in the way of rubbernecking at a car crash scene.

Plate, you can't predict the future. It may shake things up somewhat but "destroy" is a strong word full of lead. Maybe Labour will thrive with Blairites finally put into position.

Maybe all the Blairites will bugger off & form their own centre-right party & leave the Labour Party fir the socialists. That wouldn't be a bad thing long-term. (& Liz Kendall & her ilk can cross the floor. Let's have a proper shake-up)

A splintered party would still have to find enough common ground and mutual understanding to work together if they ever wanted a shot at forming a government.

What you are suggesting TheOne has happened before in 1982 with the formation of the SDP and the gang of four who left Labour to form it. It then took Labour a further fifteen years to get back into government after that split. IMO history will repeat itself if such a split happened.

I like him and agree with almost everything he says BUT I don't think voters of an undecided/ moderate tory/ lib Dem persuasion would ever vote in a gov led by him, so I am going for Andy Burnham.

the political climate is very different now & Labour is no opposition at all currently. Shiny Dave has some delightful plans for obliterating the unions. We need a different Labour party now.

Agree completely with TheOne. Blair goes on about the party needing to be closer to the centre, because nobody will vote for them otherwise. So in other words, the principles on which the party was built and the reasons most people ever voted for them can be forgotten. Why shouldn't there be a credible left wing opposition in parliament?

They can't get much worse off than they currently are anyway. One Scottish MP left. One.

Unsurprising. everyone I know is planning to vote for him.
