Getting a tad tired of politicians using this phrase. Should it not be the "people of the country". Are there not single people who deserve recognition. What about the orphans! It is a tiny niggle but am having a slow day Smile

I think Ed n Dave are both using it to show they are the parties of the ordinary people.

Dave, to refute allegations he's a man for the rich and Ed to refute that he is a man for the underclasses.

It's also, I think, refelcting the mood of the country where many, ordinary, working people have felt overlooked for years and have felt that in some cases thos enot owrking where better off financially.

I completely agree OP. DP and I don't have children and we're like 'yeah great, thanks a lot, what does that make us then?!' They should be saying they want to make things better for everyone. Although if Cameron said this, I wouldn't know whether to laugh or tear my hair out

I agree, OP. All we hear about are "working families". Not everyone is in a family, yet are equally important. Very annoying.

But wouldn't talking about the population or the citizens be more encompassing. I take the point that they are heading for the middle ground but I find the phrase jarring. As in if your family is not working we are not interested in your needs.

It's a constant dilution in trying to win everyone over. Insipid!

Where's Nye Bevan when you need him?

I hate it too. As if you've no value if you don't have paid employment. Supporting both parents to work a lot of hours by providing free/subsidised childcare is not a good idea IMO. Where is the benefit to the treasury in having two parents on low wages who pay little in the way of income tax and cost the tax-payer by using free child-care and taking days off sick to look after children or make themselves sick with the stress of always juggling their time?

There has to be some slack in the system anyway - stuff happens: children get sick, elderly parents need care, neighbours go unnoticed in the awful, stressful daily grind of hurrying little children out of the house in the early mornings before struggling through congested traffic to work.

The political parties know that parents vote - younger people are less likely to do so, so they offer the bribe of free childcare.
