How can Hunt still be there? Does the man have no shame? Do the govt think we're stupid?

Just that really.

How the hell is he still there? What kind of banana republic do we live in?!!

Dunno. Maybe you can ask Harriet Harman, who seems to have all the evidence proving Hunt a liar. She forgot to pass any on to Leveson though where they found nothing wrong with the way Hunt approached the bid.

Why should the man step down if he is innocent (which any fair minded observer of the questioning yesterday would conclude)?

breadandbutterfly · 01/06/2012 09:37

'They found nothing wrong with the way Hunt approached the bid.' Er, have you read anything about Leveson? They found reeated evidence of Hunt breaking the ministerial code.

Cable lost his job in chare of making the decision because evidence came to light that he was not impartial - he was strongly against Murdoch. So Hunt should lose his for the same reason - because, against all advice to the contrary, not only was he strongly in favour of the bid from the start, but he continued to leak secret govt info to New International and to repeatedly meet staff from there.

Of course, I know the answer to my own question. The reason Hunt is there and the Tories are deserate for him not to be investigated by the independent investigator is because Hunt is the only one standing in front of avid Cameron (and to a lesser extent Osborne).

David Cameron should never have picked him for the role of judging the bid when it was apparent from the start he was anything but impartial. In fact, as Osborne's text makes obvious, that was entirely deliberate.

Shocking, absolutely shocking.

looktoshinford - you must work for Tory HQ. Or be really dim. Or probably both. Just shocked by the ignorance/naivety of your post.

I agree with looktoshinford. I think you'd have struggled to find someone at the time who wasn't vehemently opposed to or fully in favour of the bid. Murdoch has that 'Marmite' quality, after all. Hunt was in favour pre being assigned the judicial role and I don't think that was a secret. (Cable's sin was being outed as anti during the procedure) He seems to have be particularly careful to follow the procedure to the letter afterwards - understandable given the shit heaped on Cable's head. His aide - or whoever he was - obviously got too chummy and exceeded his brief. If I was to criticise Hunt for anything it would be not keeping his assistants on a tighter leash.

breadandbutterfly · 01/06/2012 16:22

Just so wrong - firstly, what his aides do is his responsibility - if they are leaking stuff they shouldn;t have been, it is his head that needs to roll too. Secondly, he was NOT careful to follow the procedure to the letter or anything like it - he deliberately flouted legal advice not to have any contact with NI once appointed to judge the bid. He tried to cover his tracks by deliberately using private texts and emails.

As i don't believe you can actually be that obtuse, Iam beginning to believe that you too work for Tory Central Office, cogito. Shock

FFS he lied barefacedly and the emails and texts were just laughable.

Corgito · 02/06/2012 08:32

LOL! A difference of opinion doesn't automatically mean that anyone holding it works for a political party.

breadandbutterfly · 02/06/2012 15:47

cogito - you may be Tory but you're not thick. So just don't know how you could claim that everything was above board.

OP posts:
edam · 02/06/2012 15:57

Yes, he clearly has no shame - just a desperate need to cling onto his job even when everyone knows he's a feeble little shit who lied and cheated. And yes, the govt. thinks we are stupid and won't notice - they are banking on Hunt's appearance at Leveson being forgotten by the time parliament is back. Why Leveson allowed Hunt to time his appearance when parliament was away and just before the Jubilee weekend I do not know - seems he was keen to be helpful to the government...

MooncupGoddess · 02/06/2012 16:01

Just extraordinary. The point, as other people have said, is not what he thought privately but how he behaved. I'm sure his aide was acting with Hunt's full knowledge and approval.

But, if he goes there's no one to draw the heat from Cameron....

edam · 02/06/2012 17:43

What I love about all these shysters is the way they expect everyone else to treat their obvious lies with respect. And pretend to believe them, even though everyone knows it's codswallop.

An ordinary member of the public who told great big whoppers on oath would be treated very differently indeed. Case in point, the guy who pointed out Tony Blair was a war criminal - the only person speaking the truth in that room, and he got thrown out. (And I am NOT a Tory, btw.)

Ridiculous that the various Murdochs and their henchmen have been treated as though it's true that they are not able to remember anything. A milder form of Ernest Saunder's convenient Alzheimers - remember his miraculous 'recovery' that only happened after he'd got away with it?

Corgito · 03/06/2012 10:20

I'm not saying everything was above board. Obviously there were communications that probably shouldn't have happened during the process. However, everyone's main problem seems to be that 'Hunt approved' pre-bid and, from what I've heard, this didn't actually translate into special treatment. The bid failed.

edam · 03/06/2012 10:53

Only because it was revealed that Millie Dowler's phone was hacked. The government was determined to push this through, ignoring all the evidence on phone hacking - until that tipping point.

It wasn't fair play that meant the bid failed, it was events, dear boy, events.

noddyholder · 03/06/2012 10:57

I know the turn a blind eye and cajole the liar is like a national sport!

Dawndonna · 03/06/2012 11:00

Every other minister was/is responsible for the behaviour of their aides.
So, if the aide is to go, then generally, so should the minister.

edam · 03/06/2012 11:13

True, Dawn, but even that's a cover - pretending the minister knew nothing about it. As if!

amillionyears · 03/06/2012 11:18

A side question. Is Corgito the same person as CogitoErgoSometimes.Taken me months to notice there are 2 of you.

breadandbutterfly · 03/06/2012 11:48

Well spotted - I thought it was the same! Surely it is - on the same thread and all...?

Should have said... name change in recognition of the Jubilee weekend. CogitoErgoSometimes is my usual moniker. :)

breadandbutterfly · 04/06/2012 14:14

Very nice - missed the opportunity to rename myself breadandcucumbersandwiches. :)
