Through work, I may have to move to Salisbury. Can anyone mums tell me what it's like to live and work there? Also, what are the local schools like?

It's a wonderful place to live a d work. Great range of school for primary, including the surrounding villages.
Not so sure about secondaries. Huge range if private too, but state has great reputation.
Beautiful, friendly place

Thank you, do you know anyone who knows about the local secondary Catholic school? I'm not certain what it's called.

Is it St Joseph's? While we were there parents sent their children there rather than the other school on the same rd as it was co ed and had a better reputation. Don't know anyone with kids there now sorry

That's okay - you've been a great help thank you.

Salisbury is lovely I spent some of my childhood there and went to school there. South Wilts Grammar School for girls and Bishops Wordsworth (it's boys equivalent) both have good reputations. There's an independent school whose name escapes me (I think it's also girls), I want to say St Mary's but that is also the name of a church and roundabout in Salisbury so I may be confused.

It's a nice area. Grin

I lived there too when i was younger - thought it was a bit of an old peoples place, but now I'm older I love it!

Lots of lovely architecture, parks, river, shops etc

Am a bit jealous now. Envy

Isaaccount · 22/05/2012 21:19

No need to be jealous - it's really encouraging to hear such positive things. At the moment we live in an area which is quite depressed. There isn't any competition for any of the schools because none of them are particularly good. I'd love to live in a better area though wonder if it would be a rat race?

Of all the cities I've lived near or in Salisbury is the least rat race so your ok there. We lived in a nearby village but were in most days. Beautiful.

It has a massive Waitrose. What more could you want?!

Hi I live in Salisbury and can confirm that it is a wonderful place to live. Only issue is the secondary education system; if your children dont get in BWS or South Wilts the other state alternatives are mediocre to poor IMO, St Joseph's is improving but not great. Godolphin is girls only private or there is Leehurst Swan mixed (not sure how good this is). Lots of competition for grammar school entry but they have great results. Otherwise truly fantastic place to live!

I'm going to do a little exercise and compare my town's schools against the ones on Salisbury. I'll let you know what I discover! My hunch is that our best ones might not be as good as even the mediocre ones in Salisbury.

Isaa, you could well be right!

Lovely place to live generally. It's surrounded by beautiful countryside and picturesque little villages. It is a small city though so cannot always support the same leisure activities as large urban areas.

Isaaccount · 25/05/2012 20:08

As I suspected, even the better school in my home town isn't as good as the less achieving school in Salisbury. That's purely based on the statistics which of course, only makes up part of the picture. I do like the sound of St Edmunds school for girls. Can anyone else comment on that school?
