... are a) out of touch with reality, b) not that keen on swallowing 1000 calories of salt, lard and greasy meat, c) prefer to make their own, d) none of the above? Loved Osborne's slightly horrified 'no' when asked if he'd ever bought a Greggs pastie but not sure it's quite as politically meaningful as some are trying to make out.

I have never had a pasty in my life, and I'm not even an heiress to a wallpaper fortune. I just don't really fancy the idea. Much as I hate Gideon I can't really hold non-pasty-eating against him.

ohdearwhatdoidonow · 29/03/2012 12:53

Why are you only picking on Greggs! The whole VAT system is ridiculous. VAT on Sanitary protection but not on caviar?

ohdearwhatdoidonow · 29/03/2012 12:54

Not you you but the general you iyswim

cheesesarnie · 29/03/2012 12:57

im in cornwall, greggs pasty is worse than the worse swear word you can imagine.

BoysBoysBoysAndMe · 29/03/2012 12:58

People who don't eat greggs pasties?.... Should try one. Some of them are bloody lovely Grin

Though I don't eat them often. My last one was prob about a year ago. Bad for you but delicious

BikeRunSki · 29/03/2012 12:59

Oh, is George Osborne the Osborne and Little Osborne then?

I have never had a Gregg's pasty. Not even when they were a little local bakery down the road when I lived in Newcastle. There are better things to do with calories.

StealthPolarBear · 29/03/2012 13:00

Don't think I've ever had one (or the vegi alternative)
Also never eaten from/in KFC

VickityBoo · 29/03/2012 13:04

Never had anything from Greggs...not that keen on dry flaky pastry to be honest.

andisa · 29/03/2012 15:27

Do they also add VAT to sushi? Is there a better way of educating people than penalising many who have not been introduced yet to finer cuisine?

scaryteacher · 29/03/2012 17:06

I thought Ginsters was the worst cheesesarnie?

I have never eaten a Greggs pasty, as being from Cornwall, I can buy ones from proper pasty shops. Also, I would have to drive about an hour either to Truro or Exeter to get to a Greggs, so why bother, when I can pop into Callington and get one from the pasty shop in Church Street - I recommend the cheese and onion one.

MoreBeta · 29/03/2012 17:15

VAT on food is/was a minefield of inconsitency.

I really think the whoe Greggs furore is absolutely an attempt to make it consistent. Why should a cafe serving a hot takeaway have to charge VAT while Greggs serving a hot pasty is exempt?

I have nothing against Greggs - its actually a very very good company. It's just tax has to be consistent.

Chandon · 29/03/2012 17:18

There are some foods I just would not eat. That simple really!

Pasties, lardy cakes, tuna pie, tinned pasta, sausage rolls, cheap cake made with rapeseed oil, the horror!

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 29/03/2012 17:20

This is probably the only thing Gideon and I have in common.

EssentialFattyAcid · 29/03/2012 17:21

d) don't like the taste or texture of pasties and anyhow there is no Greggs anywhere in my region

MadameChinLegs · 29/03/2012 17:22

Mmmm....cheese and onion pasty.

Kellamity · 29/03/2012 17:24

Pasty virgin here too, just don't fancy them. I've never had a KFC either.

AWomanCalledHorse · 29/03/2012 17:25

d) I only shop at the local independent bakeries since the best one in the area shut down after Greggs opened 5 doors down.

Chandon, tinned pasta?!? Shock

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 29/03/2012 17:25

People who don't eat greggs pasties?.... Don't know what they're missing!

My lunch today just didn't hit the spot and I am now CRAVING a chicken or cheese and onion Greggs' delight. Don't fancy my chances of finding one near work though ? South Kensington, not known for its cheap chain emporiums. Grin

Ryoko · 29/03/2012 17:29

This is all bullshit, it's a smoke screen, the tories learned years ago to have one headline grabbing pile of bullshit per tax increase/ law change etc to get peoples attention away from the more important matters.

This is one of them, something that is so ridiculous that people will be babbling about it until the government do a u-turn on it or water it down. Then everyone will shut up and move on happy in the belief that they made the government back down on something and completely forget about all the other changes that where mentioned at the time time.

AWomanCalledHorse · 29/03/2012 17:32

LadyClarice, there is big-ish one on Earls Court road if you don't mind the trek!

IndieSkies · 29/03/2012 17:35

I'd love to try a Greggs pasty, I bet they are very satisfying. I am just never near a greggs when I would be buying lunch at work, and I can't think of any other circumstances under which I would buy one.

I wouldn't make a habit of it - too stodgy, greasy and sweaty.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 29/03/2012 17:38

Really want a sausage roll now.

Ryoko · 29/03/2012 17:46

Me too, I want to try a Greggs steak what ever it is.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 30/03/2012 07:21

" the tories learned years ago to have one headline grabbing pile of bullshit"

From the coverage I've seen, this has all been whipped up by opposition politicians trying to claim that this is some kind of attack on the poor.... who, as we all know, eat nothing but pasties Hmm
