... a tax on bankers' bonuses!!! article here. Given the many other things this mythical, and seemingly inexhaustible, tax has been offered up to pay for in recent months, I simply don't believe them.

Even I am willing to admit that that sounds a bit pie-in-the-sky. While I DO think that there should be a tax on Bankers' bonuses, I doubt that even a VERY punitive tax rate would cover enough to ensure a job paying NMW to everyone.

And besides, Capitalism would fail if EVERYONE was working. Because there would be such a low availability of workers that it would drive UP labour costs. Which would hurt profits.

WasabiTillyMinto · 16/03/2012 15:39

but that would not be a failure of capitalism, that would be the market functioning. some companies would adapt and some would not survive.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 16/03/2012 15:43

WTF?

And strictly speaking there already is a tax on bankers' bonuses, they pay 50%...

Orwellian · 16/03/2012 16:24

The Labour party could just do what they did in the old Soviet Union and pay someone to dig a hole and then pay someone else to fill it in. We'd have 100% employment all paid for by the great big magical money tree of happiness and abundance!

WasabiTillyMinto · 16/03/2012 16:34

& we can all consider the old Soviet Union lovely place to live, can't we?

'Mr Miliband said that if Labour were in power, the first line of its Budget would be "real jobs, real wages, a real chance for our young people".'

Really? That sounds like more real spin.

claig · 16/03/2012 18:42

'But Mr Miliband also warned young people they have a responsibility to take the chance and that "saying 'No' is not an option".'

Oh, oh. What would happen if they didn't? Would it involve real benefits being stopped?

claig · 16/03/2012 18:47

'Those taking part will be expected to turn up for work, as well as looking for a full-time job and complete training, or face "tough consequences" - including possible benefit sanctions.'

So the real chance is take it or face tough consequences. That sounds lihe a real chance that can't be refused.

landofsoapandglory · 16/03/2012 18:48

Which begs the question, if it were that simple why didn't they do it during the 13 years they were in power?

claig · 16/03/2012 18:57

'The Labour leader said the "only answer to a job crisis was jobs"'

What would he say about a debt crisis - the "only answer to a debt crisis was debt"'?

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 16/03/2012 19:09

He is such a fucking idiot, it frightens me to think that there is even the slimmest chance he might be PM.

WasabiTillyMinto · 16/03/2012 19:28

Why didn't they do this when they were in power? Because they were too busy deregulating the banks & cosying up with them. Funny blairs job with jpmorgan....
