Politics Book Club anyone?

I wondered if anyone would be interested in forming a politics book club.

I thought it would be great to read & share ideas on a range of political theories rather than just attacking the blue, red and yellow teams

Maybe everyone could recommend a book either economics, political theory, sociology, history of democracy even, classics we have all heard of to little known works of the C17th, fiction and non fiction, anything really that might challenge our ideas and introduce new ways of thinking. From Libertines to social anarchists..........we could discuss and review without too much party political bun fightingGrin

Good idea. Someone has already suggested this and they were going to discuss 'Chavs' but nothing came of it.

A book that sounds mighty interesting iswww.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2096277/Global-warming-James-Delingpole-claims-green-zealots-destroying-planet.html

minimathsmouse · 29/02/2012 13:02

That looks interesting Claig, Dh believes all this propaganda about global warming is just another form of extortion, another way of generating money, I don't know but like everyone, concern for our planet is top of my priorities. So yep that looks good.

I think we need to get one suggestion from everyone who wants to join and then have a vote to decide which suggestion we read first. Don't know if that would be a good idea. Does that sound fair?

I bought and read Chavs when this was last proposed...then it fell of my threads-I'm-on and I forgot Blush

minimathsmouse · 29/02/2012 13:06

Would you like to join in Bucharest, we could read chavs or feel free to recommend a different book.

I haven't read Chavs, lots of people have said it's worth a read.

Blimey, minimathsmouse, I am amazed that you as a lefty haven't swallowed the global warming pill. That is great to hear. Extortion is only a small part of it. It is much worse than that. Delingpole seems to have many angles covered, but not all of them.

Yes, good idea to vote on teh most popular book or subject.

minimathsmouse · 29/02/2012 13:29

No I have't swallowed any strange pills not even green ones Grin

I will put forward "An Introduction to Political Philosophy" by Wolf

www.amazon.co.uk/Introduction-Political-Philosophy-Jonathan-Wolff/dp/019929609X

It covers every theory in relation to who should rule, why anyone should rule, the human being as something part of but also apart from the state.

The Wolff book sounds very interesting and would make a great read.

minimathsmouse · 01/03/2012 14:50

I think we need a few more people to join to make the book club viable
Anyone else up for reading and discussion?

lesley33 · 02/03/2012 11:53

I will join!

sakura · 02/03/2012 11:56

I'd like this, I think. Studied politics at uni, quite liked it, but now I'm completely out of the loop and would like to brush up.

minimathsmouse · 02/03/2012 12:57

Hi Lesley33 and Sakura,

I was thinking everyone could suggest a book and then we could have a ballotSmile that sounds democratic! to decide which book we read first.

I'd like to suggest The Spirit Level by Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett.

minimathsmouse · 08/03/2012 16:22

Hi Downtomylastcigarette, that looks really interesting, I think I might really enjoy your bookSmile

I think we have 6 people so far, I'll send a message to Sakura and leslie and see if they are still interested and if they would like to recommend a book. Then if its Ok with everyone we could take a poll to decide the first book.
