Smoking in cars with kids

Saw a family stop at the traffic lights, kids in back parent driving with a fag in his mouth. I felt so sorry and helpless for the kid. Who do these parents think they are? I don't understand. Are they insane, completely selfish or has their addiction consumed them to the degree that they aren't in control and the cigarette is more important than their kids health? When they bring a kid into this life, its their duty to look after it, not harm it ffs. Angry Sure, if you don't have kids in car, feel free to smoke, but not when you have kids in their with you.

Can't believe this hasn't been banned already. Poor kids. The kid has no choice to breath in the smoke. The public has been educated enough, sometimes law needs to be in place to help. Here are some petitions - one by BLF.

Smoking in cars is unpleasant for any other occupants but, presumably, anyone doing that won't stop there. They'll also smoke in their home when their children are present as well - potentially a far bigger part of the day. Unless you're going to put some kind of blanket ban on 'smoking in the presence of children', I don't think you're going to make much of an impact and I also don't think it would be possible to police.

There are already Highway Code rules on being in full control of vehicles which means that juggling with packets of cigarettes and lighters could potentially earn someone a fine. But education not legislation is the way forward otherwise.

Won't be signing the petition.

It is illegal here in most Australian states.

Here in Victoria you cannot smoke in a car if there a any passengers ages under 18yrs in the car too. The fine is approx £380.

People have been educated enough. Everyone is taught about the dangers of smoking in school. Every adult knows about the dangers, education only does so much. As a society, we have to protect kids from those who chose not to learn, those who are selfish or those who are so addicted they are unable to help themselves.
I heard the same thing about seatbelts, people wouldn't be able to police that, so please don't use that adage about enforcing, that's used to often. A huge number of laws could be considered unenforceable, but they are still in place and most people abide by them just in case there is a policeman around.
Kudos to Australia!
