WTF are Frothers? Not a quiche, but a protest group. Fighting for the "basic line of British decency" against fiscal brutality.

What are Frothers?

The term "Frothers" came about one dank and dismal November day in 2011. A frustrated user of the parenting forum Mumsnet started a thread about her dismay at the cuts that the Conservative/Liberal Democrat government was inflicting on the British public.

She stated that she was not "quite a frothing berserker but I am getting rather cross with our government messing with the good stuff".

The good stuff - policies, benefits, institutions that had taken years to achieve were being cut for no good reason, often leaving gaping holes in the fabric of British society.

The NHS, with which we Brits have a love-hate relationship, but like a favourite sibling, we wish to protect from harm.

Sure Start, a successful scheme that supported parents who were struggling and offered children from deprived backgrounds a better start in life.

Universal Child Benefit was cut for those families who had one earner bringing in more than £44k a year. If both parents each earn less than £44k, they keep their UCB payments. This obviously hit single parents and families with a single earner hardest.

Disability Living Allowance and Employment and Support Allowance - which enabled those with disabilities to live a decent life, without feeling that they were begging for assistance or were a burden to the taxpayer.

Student Fees, the introduction of which, contrary to Lib Dem pre-election promises, means that a whole generation of young people will have to think carefully before applying to higher education.

These and many other cuts are being made in the name of austerity. We are "all in this together", but some of us are deeper in this than others.

We all understand that there are sacrifices to be made but why should these sacrifices be borne by those who already have so little?

The general public seems oblivious of the dangers being faced, they are unaware of the injustices being wrought on the already disadvantaged.

The government is winning the war of the headlines. They have blasted the recipients of DLA and ESA as scrounger and cheats so often that the general public believe it. They misinterpret data to "prove" their points. Teachers are painted as being irresponsible and greedy, while the bankers rake in the money.

The poster on Mumsnet was not alone for long. Within a few days, a group of over 30 posters had formed. They asked themselves, "What can we do?".

The idea of a blog was born. Three days later the blog had over thirty authors signed up, a Facebook page and a Twitter account.

The Aims:

  • to open the general publics' eyes to the injustices being created by the governement
  • to inform those who are facing cuts about their rights
  • to link with other activists and charities, in order to put pressure on the government

Are you a Frother?

I do think it is sad to see infighting and jealousy within the disabled world too. End of day we all are fighting the same thing and think it weakens the case when were fighting amongst ourselves

Thing is no one on there knows how far I can propel or my life so they can not know how many points I will or will not qualify for

TheHumancatapult · 30/01/2012 09:05

All I was Offered on discharge was a nHs red cross style wheelchair while I waited for my urgent appointment that appointment has took 6 months I'm still waiting for the permeant wheelchair and even then had to argue for anything that is even half way suitable ( they admit they do not need to supply for outdoor) use

Am fortunate my DlA has helped ke buy a decent 2nd chair while waiting

CardyMow · 30/01/2012 10:20

Did you see BBC news this morning, THC? They have picked up on the story of how difficult it is for a wheelchair user to travel by train. Anyone get the impression that BBC researchers are reading our threads and the blog intently? Grin

Thank you, MNHQ!

With personal info removed ....

I emailed Dave Lupton for permission to use his Crippen Bus cartoon on THC's post. Here's his reply:-

Thanks for sending me the blog link. It was good of you to check it out with me.

Great article and addresses a lot of the hypocrisy that exists within this government and modern society. I'm proud to have my cartoon associated with it.

Keep up the good work and please feel free to use any of my cartoons for your work in this respect.

Kind regards,

Dave

SGM - Hope your family member is soon feeling much better.

Hunty - yes, saw that on Breakfast news, record numbers of people with disabilities are using the railways, but much more needs to be done to improve facilities. The article is here.

SGM
Hope your family member is ok.

Sorry I am not about. Trying to organise a mortgage as we have had our offer on the house accepted, but the bloody bank now says we have to wait till we move to UK. After being all "oh, we are used to expats, no problems at all". Feckers.

Good work on the cartoonist - I loved that cartoon.

KatieMiddleton · 30/01/2012 18:45

Bravo! Well done everyone. Brilliant stuff. All of it - blogs, cartoons etc etc

ThePinkPussycat · 30/01/2012 23:49

Just had a look at the blog and it's all flickery as I scroll down. We have v slow internet here, that might have something to do with it?

Cartoon at the bottom of THC's thread (I'm out of bed and I made it to the keyboard. What more do you want?) made me want to add a caption: so that means you're fit for work then.

ThePinkPussycat · 30/01/2012 23:51

not witty I know, erm No more ESA for you then, my girl!

garlicfrother · 31/01/2012 00:20

Nice one, TPP! I've added your joke.

The blog uses a lot of javascript so, yes, it may be awkward on a slow connection or a very old machine. You could turn javascript off if it's bothering you - it's unprofessional of me to say that, but haven't got the time/energy to rework it for now.

I emailed my (tory) MP last week asking them to support the amendments - which are back in th House of Commons tomorrow (HoL today) and still haven't had a reply.

I wonder if she even read it?

TeWihara · 31/01/2012 17:00

Hello my lovelies - good stuff in HoL again today, those of you with DC on lower rate DLA - the proposal was that Higher rate would be nearly £80ish, and lower would be £25ish, amendment has gone through which means lower rate can't be less than 2/3rds of higher rate.

Finally finally caught up....

Welcome sunshine, thc, tpp,... Etc...

I have been finding myself throwing out plenty of frothing facts recently. .. It's truly amazing how little people need to know and understand about something before they have a strong opinion on it! Me, I like to learn, reserve judgement, check! I was taught not to believe everything I was told, read, saw on tv, but to check for myself. I wish more people did that.

Anyway, certainly sharing the word on the street to educate folk. It's definitely the Housing Benefit bit that most people misunderstand. They don't realise it's often not enough, and goes straight to landlords.

Hunty... They really rip up the carpets ?.. WHY? Whose bright idea was that? No one rips up carpets when they sell, move etc. Does someone on high have a deal with a carpet firm or what?. Crazy. Shock

Been thinking about the tags, labelling prob on the blog. I've seen one before where a page is set up and it automatically searches and pulls in all relevant posts into one page. Also a menu would be good for some of the key info posts. I can have a play if you are all happy for me to. I am decent at the techy stuff now and keen to help where I can! Blush

CardyMow · 31/01/2012 20:47

They rip up the carpets in case there are problems with lingering fleas, dirty carpets etc, but it now means that when you take a council or HA house, you have to factor in not just removal costs, but the cost of carpeting an entire house. Which can be £1,000+. AND they are often in a state of disrepair, peeling paint or wallpaper, mould on the walls, damaged doors etc. SOME councils give out 'decorating vouchers'. Mine doesn't anymore. So you also have to allow for the cost of decorating a whole house so that it is habitable. And NOW they want rent up front too!

yummymummyreally · 31/01/2012 21:03

Blooming Nora! (as my nana may have said)!
Madness!

Hunty.. Is there any way you could make a few extra pennies with your writing? You are so eloquent on the threads..I just wonder if it might be something that could ease the £pressure a bit? Freelance articles maybe?

If I lost my job I think I'd try and monetize my blog better in the first instance and send of some stuff to mags, editors? I love to write but just do it for fun at the moment. But it could raise pennies I guess if I put the time in, so I wondered if it was something you could do? Mainly because it's doable at home in your own time? Just a thought? I don't know any editors though! Sorry!

garlicfrother · 31/01/2012 21:40

Yummy, if you're prepared to re-tag the posts you've certainly got the go-ahead (and gratitude) from me :)

Used rationally, the tags do form a menu and present a page of all the posts with the selected tag - click on one of the tags on toomanycuts.blogspot.com and you'll get that, it's just that we could be using them to better advantage.

I don't mind turning the rationalised tags into a menu if people want it.

We really need to get lots of noise on Twitter tomorrow if everyone is prepared to get tweeting - it's back to the house of commons and to see whether or not the bastard IDS really is going to succeed in shoving the wrb without any of the amendments.

instructions for tweeting tomorrow on #frothers

garlicfrother · 31/01/2012 23:00

Superb post, Te, thank you.

I'll devote most of tomorrow to tweeting (argh!)

Spelling correction: under Amendment 38 it says 'two' instead of 'to'

pedantry is good when it's frothy (I hope!)

OpinionatedMum · 01/02/2012 08:17

@tewihara What time is it being voted on? I am back home this afternoon. Is that to late to tweet MPs?
