What can the little people do?

Like everyone else, I'm not happy about the changes made and am even unhappier about proped changes to everything we all hold so dear about this country.

Strikes are just the first step and although they were pretty much ignored recently, what else is there we, the little people, can do?

I agree that cuts need to be but they are going after the wrong people, I'm not saying for a minute that I have an answer as I dont. I'm just fustrated and scared.

We cant call for a vote of no confidence as it has to be done by the MP's and in another thread, that was deemed as an option that this governement has made it nigh on impossible for it to happen.

So what can we really do about it? Is there anything? Are we really stuck with this for another god knows how long?

Join the #frothers thread - we're starting to get organised and protest a bit.

Who would be the right people to cut?

What we need is a clearly articulated (and costed) alternative agenda.

So, as the "little people" are unlikely to have the access to the governmental data to draw one up; I suspect the best thing to do would be to stimulate those who can to get on with this.

If we're lucky, the government would then nick and use the best ideas (lots of form for interchangeable policies). If not, at least it is a clear manifesto for the next election.

How do we do that?

I'm not ignoring your first question, I just dont have the answer for it.

Edith Weston thinks we should let the Grown Ups sort it out. She appears not to have noticed they are the ones who keep messing it up. Bit like suggesting the bankers sort out the problems with the banks - because they did that really well, didn't they?

The thing, is in reality we are all grown ups, not 'little people' at all - molepomandmistletoe, don't let them kid you they know more than you, or that your views matter any less than theirs. People don't become politicians because they're more knowledgeable - they become politicians because they're power mad, in most cases, and would do or say anything - however stupid, in the short or long term - to hold on to it.

We do know better - and make your voice heard in every way you can.

To do list; protest, blog, persuade your friends, join Avaaz and 38 degrees, support strikes, write to your MP, write to your newspaper...

It's a fair point though - if you've not seen the budget nor know how the departments work, how do you know how to change it without unintended consequences?

And if these cuts are the wrong ones what are the right ones?

There is plenty of noise about what's wrong, but much less (if any) about what should be done instead. I agree with breadandbutterfly's 20:31:20 post about steps to take, and I would like to see a hell of a lot more people taking constructive action.

But there remains a lack of substance at present; there is no adequate alternative.
