UK 9/11 Memorial for 67 victims, why not the same for 160+ Human BSE UK victims?

Not many of you probably know this but there is a memorial site in London by the River Thames which has a plaque in memory of those innocent UK victims who have died from the human form of mad cow's disease (vCJD). These victims are from all walks of life just like those who died in the 9/11 disaster, they were not born with this deadly disease but it was transmitted to them, ultimately leading to their deaths. What bothers me is that no politician or royal figure is ever in attendance at the annual Human BSE memorial, held on 12th November each year, why is this not given any media coverage? Why do politicians seem afraid to be involved? Is this because this dreadful lethal disease is still killing people today? Why are the victims of Human BSE ignored?

Beeaware - you see - thread has somewhat been hijaked. If you want to inform people about BSE - best just to stay on topic.

By the way - where is the memorial? I would like to keep a look out for it if ever I am in the area.

glasnost · 14/09/2011 14:07

"Nut jobs"??? 'tis truly true you don't get the same standard of ersatz insight on MN anymore.......watch the doc or SEE a doc seeing as you've fallen for the biggest conspiracy theory ever that 19 hijackers did that to the great U S of A. Sorry to hijack OP's thread but she's not flak proof enough.

Back to the bovines then...............zzzz.

Georgimama · 14/09/2011 14:32

facile
ersatz

someone's been buying word of the day toilet paper.

Maiavan · 14/09/2011 14:38

I would be more up in arms that in Rwanda, 800 000 people died in less that 100 days and nobody remembers that. Were they not mothers, fathers, sons and daughters as well?

glasnost · 14/09/2011 14:51

Georgimama being a prime bovine.

See as oppose to watch that doc then.

You used to believe father xmas existed just coz your parents told you he did then you acquired a modicum of critical thought. Unless, of course you subsist primarily on a diet of beef in which case your brain will be spongey enought to lap anything up the powers that be tell you.

So you think I should believe you because er... you say so? Excellent. Critical faculties fully engaged.

Oh well I'm convinced - both by OP nd glasnost - they both have such a way with words, its hard to resist their eloquence.

Kewcumber · 14/09/2011 15:29

You seriously expect politicans to attend every memorial service that happens in the UK?

Mind you they might casue less chaos if they attended more memorial services and governed less. On reflection perhaps you're quite right and they should go to every memorial service there is.

Presumably the great plague one is a major one then the great flu epidemic, in descending order I guess 9/11 and the July London bombings will rank quite low.

Kewcumber · 14/09/2011 15:31

Is there an old age memorial? Don't mean to be facetious but who determines what deserves a memorial?

MadameDefarge · 14/09/2011 15:49

I'm organising a memorial service for my hamster at St Pauls. So far I have David Cameron, Nick Clegg and Ed Milliband. And Prince Harry said he would try to make it...

AnyoneButLulu · 14/09/2011 16:04

I'd start with the millions killed by the tobacco industry over the years myself.

hester · 14/09/2011 16:08

This thread is the best thing to happen to me all day.

I'm hoping my evening will be an improvement.

Kewcumber · 14/09/2011 17:23

Excellent point Lulu. My grandfather died a horrible death from lung cancer.

Maiavan · 14/09/2011 17:36

The Rwandan 800 000 people were slaughtered. Is this not a human tragedy? This was 1994 not 1894!

Beaaware · 14/09/2011 20:48

Maiavan, cant see the link between UK politicians attending memorial sites in the UK and 800,000 slaughtered victims in Rwanda Confused maybe there is a memorial site in Rwanda for these poor victims?

The terrible tragedy of BSE is that nothing came with a warning for the majority of us, resulting in human deaths. Cows still develop this but not in the 100,000's, certain products now carry vCJD disclaimers, we live with the legacy, the memorial site being just one.

Keep reminding people, Beaaware. Ignore the ignorant who don't understand.

Beaaware · 15/09/2011 09:33

For those who wish to attend the human bse memorial day on 12th November 2011 all are welcome including press, TV, politicians, mumsnet mums, royalty, the plaque is next to St.Thomas's Hospital on the embankment in London, 3 minutes from Waterloo Station, time is 1.00pm.

Riven - I'd like to see an improvement in animal welfare standards generally not specifically for vCJD and happy for price of meat to go up as a result and correspondingly eat less meat (I am a confirmed meat eater and poor to boot!).

Kewcumber · 15/09/2011 12:21

(whats a bingle?)

onagar · 15/09/2011 16:57

Beaaware, I can't help noticing that you are discounting deaths in other countries as irrelevant. Are they not people too?

You also said something I find odd. The terrible tragedy of BSE is that nothing came with a warning for the majority of us,

Do you mean that the meat should have had a label saying "infected with BSE" ? If so you may have missed a fairly crucial point.

Doobydoo · 15/09/2011 17:51

Actually one of the young girl's I was in contact with had been a veggie for years...who knows where it came from
