According to the Sunday Times, there is a secret tape...

Secret tape of what? Confused

longfingernails · 14/05/2011 22:31

The subheadline is "Minister told witness to stay silent" - but i can't read anything beyond that.

Chris Huhne represents everything which is nauseating and malignant about the Lib Dems. They would be infinitely better off without him.

I hope he gets his just desserts. That Daily Mail story sounds very juicy - I can't wait to hear the secret recording.

It suggests he may have been trying to challenge for the leadership. Then the Mail breaks this. It looks like someone would rather he wasn't leader.

claig · 14/05/2011 23:04

Someone likes Clegg. I remember seeing the original BBC programme when Clegg and Huhne were battling for the leadership, and then on that show the BBC surprised Huhne with a the 'Calamity Clegg' report.

"When Mr Campbell resigned two years later, Mr Huhne stood for the leadership again and came within an ace of beating hot favourite Mr Clegg. But the contest left deep scars in the relationship between the two men.

Mr Huhne was accused of dirty tricks after a dossier entitled 'Calamity Clegg' drawn up by his campaign team, setting out his opponent's alleged flaws, was revealed.

He squirmed with embarrassment when he was confronted with the briefing document in a live television interview as he sat alongside Mr Clegg, who accused him of 'the politics of innuendo' and handing 'ammunition to the party's political opponents'."

All the media championed Clegg during the election and the Guardian even backed him 'enthusiatically'. Clegg is going nowhere, he will remain leader.

Here is the famous Calamity Clegg video.

longfingernails this isn't a dig, - but just to let you know he won't be getting his just puddings (desserts).

I think what you are saying he should get is his just deserts, not as in camels and sand, as in 'what he DESERves'. I used to wonder what desserts had to do with it whenever someone (allegedly) did something wrong.

Now for a skulk off to Pedants' Corner methinks, if such a thing exists on Mumsnet. One meets such a nice class of annoying person there!

edam · 15/05/2011 16:27

Didn't Huhne get his knickers in a twist about the no campaign not being terribly nice to him during the AV debate, and try to provoke a row at a Cabinet meeting?

Maybe this is Tory revenge. Or his ex-wife - presumably he asked her to take his points? (Although if it is her, it's a bit daft, as she would have committed an offence as well.)

HHLimbo · 15/05/2011 18:35

I think you're rather nauseating and malignant yourself LFN. x

Desserts, however, are delicious. Mmm nom nomnom..

longfingernails · 15/05/2011 21:40

edam My impression is that everyone in politics (Tory, Labour, and Lib Dem) hates Huhne equally vehemently - but I reckon this is his ex-wife taking revenge for the way he ditched her in minutes to try to save his career.

According to the Sunday Times, the person who the points were attributed to was in fact nowhere near the speed camera in question - they were at a high-profile public conference at the time of the incident in question!

As I said in my title: Oh dear, Mr Huhne. Oh dear indeed.

Incidentally, Has everyone been following the #HuhneTunes on Twitter? Some of them are very witty indeed.

An addendum... the front page of tomorrow's Telegraph says the rozzers are now going to question dear old Chris.

It's a 'hell hath no fury like a woman scorned' story. The former Mrs H is very active in politics and would know how to chop her ex off at the knees. However, in the grand roll-call of misdemeanours that senior LDs have been guilty of in the past.... 'not swindling the tax-payer your honour, just didn't want my old mum to know I was gay, honest..' a dodged speeding fine could be embarassing but not terminal.

clam · 16/05/2011 14:19

Pains me to say it, but I bet he gets away with it. Am sure I read that the alleged offence was in 2003, but the police records only go back as far as 2006.
But it's good to know he's sweating about it!

vesela · 19/05/2011 22:06

CogitoErgoSometimes - David Laws saved the taxpayer money, as has now been shown. What Chris Huhne did, if true, was far, far more serious - not to mention the fact that laws against speeding are there for a good reason, i.e. so that you don't kill people.

There's no comparison.

edam · 19/05/2011 23:18

vesela, I've got a million quid my Nigerian banker mate would like to send you, if you would only provide your bank details...

Seriously, you really fall for all this 'it's about my sexuality' crap? Rubbish. He is a very wealthy man - if he'd been desperate to keep his private life private, he could have avoided claiming for a mortgage. No-one made him put his hands in the till. He did that all by himself.

longfingernails · 21/05/2011 23:11

Why do the Tories hate Huhne so much I wonder?

hudspur · 21/05/2011 23:30

It does sound a bit dodgy but without the facts I can't judge. Many on the right of the tory party and the right wing press don't like Huhne because of his environmentalism and his desire to set strict carbon reduction targets.

longfingernails · 21/05/2011 23:45

Huhne's problem is that it isn't just Tories - or even Tories and Labour - who detest him.

Most Lib Dems hate his guts too.

Scarletbanner · 21/05/2011 23:51

I still think it's a bit odd of Vicky Price to put the story out there, if she did. Surely if he has committed any kind of offence, she has too. She must really really loathe him to be willing to confess to this. Or am I missing something...?

longfingernails · 22/05/2011 00:03

No - she just really really loathes him.

In any case, if her allegations are true, she almost certainly won't get any more than a slap on the wrist. Huhne, on the other hand, being a Cabinet Minister, could probably expect a lengthy stay at Her Majesty's Pleasure.

OP posts:
hudspur · 22/05/2011 00:04

I very much doubt that even if the allegations are true that either of them will get a prison sentence.
