He thinks that calling Tories ruthless is an insult. It isn't. It's a compliment - perhaps the finest.

If only it were true. Cameron has sold out on so much because he isn't ruthless enough. Thank heavens we have George Osborne. He is the bearer of the true small-c conservative mantle.

Also, when will Cable's little temper tantrums end?

He lost the AV referendum, he got caught trying to fiddle the Sky takeover decision, and talking about his "nuclear option".

The Lib Dems only chance at electoral resurrection is to show they are a mature party of government. Throwing hissy fits every other day isn't going to help them.

Their priority now should be on fixing the economy, fixing welfare, and fixing public services - which, happily, are also Tory priorities. Nobody except Islington "progressives" cares about constitutional meddling.

If Cameron had spent more time being ruthless rather than trying to win the affections of Guardian readers and MNers before the last general election, he might have had a majority now.

Although he has been very lucky - the Lib Dems are taking all the flak because they seem to descend into self-pitying wailing every time they have to vote on a difficult decision.

I have met both Cameron and Vince Cable. Cameron ruthless? My arse! He's too PC. If anyone is ruthless it's Vince Cable, that man has the hide of a Rhino, and he's very tough, he could not give a a shit about the views of those who don't agree with him. Grin

LFN. Are you surprised that Vince Cable has put up the EU flag in his office? His boss Clegg considers himself a 'European' so what do you expect?

Clegg got his much needed slap last Thursday, if as he said he will stop the kowtowing to the Tory scum and oppose their hard right policies on health and education.

Simon Hughes has said if it isn't in the agreement then it wont happen, well the privatisation of the NHS wasn't so we shall see if they have grown backbones.

After a year of anger I am willing to give the LD's a second chance IF they stop being ersatz Tories and fight back.

Comp, better by far to be a European then a swivel eyed little Englander :o :o

I think the real problem is that Cable and Osborne don't see eye to eye over banking regulatory reform which is probably why we've seen no movement on this front.

I don't really care whether the EU flag is being flown but if it is EU day then its probably appropriate that is flown.

I quite like Cable. At least he has the decency to look miserable whilst he carries out Tory policies. You would never have seen him having a Rose Garden moment.

I have yet to meet anyone who can actually explain to me what the overarching benefits of being in the EU actually are for the UK, as opposed to some of the Nordic states that are attached to but not in. As far as I can see it is a massive overfunded talking shop that seems to achieve the square root of diddly squat, and the UK runs around obeying all the rules (EPCs for example) whilst other countries have yet to introduce them.

Before I am shouted down for not realising the true significance and magnificence of the EU ideal, may I point out that I live 20 minutes from the centre of Brussels and that dh used to work for part of the EU and I still can't see the point!)

I wish Cable would f*ck off. He has had a face like a slapped arse since the very beginning of the aliance.Noone was twisting a knife in his back. He should have done like Robin Cook and resigned and stuck to his principles. All he has done is make sly remarks and undermined the gov at every turn. Its so unhelpful.

It's about power. You have to be in it to win it. The powerful want to be in it, in order to influence other countries. If there was really nothing in it for the powerful, why would they remain in? Why are they so keen to make sure other countries join as well? Why is the UK and Cameron so keen for Turkey to join, when the French and the Germans are against it? It's about influence, power and a say in the club. It's about big business, as Scargill says, "it's a capitalist club", and the centralisation of control means that it is a socialist's dream.

Unhappy twisted cable. Vince should jump ship and write a book about the shinnanagins of the last 12 months. I would read it. He has a good yarn to tell.
