I understand a company in St Albans is producing an unusual item of memorabilia.

A sick bag with the happy couple on the inside and outside so that those of us who feel nauseous at the cultural cringe, sycophancy and forelock tugging can puke with confidence.

www.lydialeith.com/

My sister would buy one if she were the sort of person to waste her money.

A plain paper one will do, but I certainly support the sentiment.

I don't see any evidence whatsoever of 'cultural cringe, sycophancy and forelock tugging'. It's the kind of big-scale glitzy event we excel at, an excuse for a party/bank holiday and a lucrative tourist attraction offering global commercial opportunities. Don't understand all the sour grapes....

wook · 13/04/2011 22:36

I do I do I do I do I do

newwave · 13/04/2011 22:38

Chil, the whole of the (non elected) royal edifice is based upon sycophancy

OP posts:
wook · 13/04/2011 22:38

that was meant to be Abba esque but I think I was one short.

I do!

newwave · 13/04/2011 22:45

chil, btw, the UK taxpayers are picking up the security costs for this, I thought we were skint and it isnt as if the royal ponces are short of cash.

OP posts:
wook · 13/04/2011 22:47

ponces is the word

Chil1234 · 13/04/2011 23:16

UK taxpayers may be picking up the security costs but the £££s heading for the Treasury coffers through TV rights, merchandise, tourism, mag/newspaper sales and other commercial opportunities will far outweigh the cost of a few extra coppers etc. on the streets.

I get it that some people just don't like the idea of a royal family. But why not ignore the whole thing and let others enjoy the spectacle?

newwave · 13/04/2011 23:30

That maybe true but that does not excuse the royal spongers from paying all their own costs like everyone else has to.

btw I will not be ignoring the wedding, I will be having a fuck the royal wedding and the rest of the ponces barbeque (weather permitting) an idea I will admit I have stolen from Will Self.

"that does not excuse the royal spongers from paying all their own costs like everyone else has to"..... you mean like when there's a Cup Final or some other big public event and the extra policing is funded from the public purse? Don't be silly. I'm sure you'll have a lovely time at your barbecue and look as happy as Will Self in the process.

newwave · 14/04/2011 00:42

Are you serious the costs of Policing football matches are borne by the clubs and the Cup Final by the FA.

OP posts:
Chil1234 · 14/04/2011 00:53

Yes I'm serious. For example, the FA didn't pay for the Portsmouth celebrations in 2010...

newwave · 14/04/2011 00:56

No but they bloody well should have and they should have been taken to court to recover it.

Unlike the wedding security costs which we have been landed with it was not expected that Pompey would renage on their obligations.

OP posts:
Chil1234 · 14/04/2011 01:09

We've known from the outset that the security costs would be met from the public purse. The family are paying for pretty much everything else, which seems fair. If the happy couple popped to a registry office incognito I'm sure they'd be quite satisfied with the arrangement but, for commercial reasons, it's better if we turn it into a public event on a bigger scale. I'm overseas at the moment and every magazine is filled with Kate & Will pictures and there are UK-related tourism adverts on the TV highlighting the wedding and the olympics. In a recession, we need all the business coming our way we can get..... Worth a bit of police overtime

Niceguy2 · 14/04/2011 08:45

Is there anything you actually like about this country Newwave? If you hate it so much, why don't you look to move to a country who follows your own views more closely?

I hear North Korea and Cuba are still ideologically socialist, although the latter is moving towards capitalism. But hey, neither have a royal family!

This has been discussed before. The amount that we are set to gain in tourism is something like £600million. And we're being asked to pay a few million in security costs. Most of which would be being spent on coppers anyway (ie. their normal salary) and some overtime. Given the security will virtually all be UK staff, the money moving around the economy will be a bonus.

So....invest a few million, reap £600million out. If you can't do the maths then there's no hope for you.

I'm no royalist. I won't be watching the wedding. But hey, I get the day off! RESULT!

purits · 14/04/2011 08:53

But newwave, I thought your idea of getting us out of the recession was to increase public spending. I thought you would be pleased by this.

midnightexpress · 14/04/2011 08:54

I'm not a monarchist either, couldn't be less interested in the wedding and am politically a leftie, but I agree that the economic/tourism benefits far outweigh the cost of security for the event. Apparently it is all over the press in the US and Canada, and that has to be a good thing for the British economy, surely?

And hell, an extra bank holiday this year, and an extra one next year for the Queen's jubilee can't be all bad.
