Why are public-sector administrators so crap?

Recently, out of whimsy, I decided to interview a couple of ex-public sector types for a new company I have recently started.

I am not talking about nurses and policemen, I am talking about back-office jobs.

LOL.

No wonder the public sector is so rubbish at everything.

The private sector is going to grow a lot over the next few years - but unfortunately, the ex-public sector employees won't get these jobs. They will go to immigrants, or for new positions, graduates.

They are simply too lazy and in general, too unmotivated. They just don't understand why they should go the extra mile - probably because in the public sector, they never have to.

A pity for them - ah well. They can always march for their "entitlements".

I worked in the private sector for 20 years and the only staff who ever got sacked did so for gross misconduct. A good proportion of the worst staff got promoted to management. Hmm

There are poor staff in both public and private sectors.

But graduates don't fill every vacancy in an organisation. Graduate programmes are a bit different - fast moving etc etc.

longfingernails · 26/03/2011 16:50

On that, I agree entirely. Hiring experienced candidates is totally different to hiring graduates - but often, firing bad middle-rankers who have plateaued does make room for more junior hires.

What sweeping generalisations you make OP - I have worked in both the private and public sector and can say that where I currently work (public sector adult learning services) I have never worked with a more dedicated, hardworking, loyal and supportive bunch of people in my life.

mollymole · 26/03/2011 17:01

i have worked in both and there are good and bad in both, however it does seem that the poorer ones in public sector get sheltered from the shit by their unions and the private sector just get rid of the poor (now all the lefties will tell us why this means we should all join a union).
only 2 days ago i asked a public sector to send me an e mail to my branches
e mail address - told can't do this can only send it to the registered e mail address, (the other branch) but they could send me a form to alter this - if my boss authorised supply of this form - so she did there and then over the phone so I waited for it and it did not come - got back to them and asked where was it as no e mail arrived - can't send the form to you as you are not the registered e mail address - so can you fax it to me then or post it - no not until you have filled in the form and it has gone through our system, well can you send it to our registered address (so they could then send it to me) - no can't do this as they (our registered address ) haven't asked for it.
what a bloody farce - so closed down computer. logged in again and accessed computer at other branch and sent same request & they then rang me up to say they knew it was me just asking and not a 'genuine' request from the registered e mail address - so they are not only bloody jobsworth idiots but psychic.
the next day our other branch emailed them , received a telephone call on their own number asking if they would confirm that they have sent the request and then finally !!!!!!!! they recieved a form they could send to me
what a bloody farce and waste of time

We are you all indulging LFN's fantasy about her self-importance? So she gets all wimsical about something, says that she interviewed a couple of people and then uses that to draw conclusions that she had previously come to in any event. Trollish behaviour and posters shouldn't be feeding it.

LegoStuckinMyhoover · 26/03/2011 17:26

Good luck with the company, hope it earns you well.

Hope you dont find yourself down the job centre asking for 'entitlements' if it flops. Am hoping even more, that if it does flop, they tell you to 'jog march on love' Biscuit

LaydeeC · 26/03/2011 18:31

I have read through the first page and simply cannot be bothered to even press the next icon.
You really are a piece of work op.
You base your observations on two people. TWO PEOPLE!!!!
I am a public sector worker and frankly, I would give any employee in the private sector a damn good run for their money.
How very bloody dare you taint all public workers in this way.
And how fucking niaive to believe that shite workers don't exist in the private sector. And shite employers.
Fuck off with your divisive prejudices and biased agendas.

LegoStuckinMyhoover · 26/03/2011 23:25

still, j o g o n.

Loshad · 26/03/2011 23:41

the really scary bit about lfn is she cannot distinguish between being sacked, and struck off.
Only 8 teachers were struck off for being incompetant - in other words were so awful they were dangerous - a very small number as you would expect.
No information what so ever about how many teachers were sacked for being useless - and indeed that would be very hard to discern as most good schools simply performance manage poor teachers out - that happens in every school, and often in some.

OrangeBernard · 26/03/2011 23:43

Long fingernails, do fuck off back Cameron's arse, there's a love.

flippinada · 27/03/2011 19:38

Realise I've come in on the back end of this but I didn't realise that people looking to fill job vacancies were in the habit of interviewing 'out of whimsy'.

Especially in the go-getting, dynamic, private sector.

flippinada · 27/03/2011 19:40

Oh, I see this is a troll thread. Apologies for taking such silliness even semi-seriously.

maypole1 · 01/04/2011 15:11

longfingernails totaly agree its such a cosy job job if you can get it when i worked for the council we had a kichen fully stocked a juice bar also a libuary yes a libuary ,people often took a spanish lunch also before 10 and after 4 the place was deserted.

it was a well cosy number people on face book to be honest most people were on face book or having a chat of a little wonder to the break out area all i know is if you worked in the private sector you couldnt do half of what you do at the council.

we didnt have to wear work were alot of the older women wore slippers and kept their shoes in their locker often people were on line

pulling a sicky was standared i never been in an office were so many people were off for stress

woollyideas · 01/04/2011 20:10

I agree with LaydeeC and think the OP should just fuck right off with her stupid blinkered prejudice.

I've also worked in both public and private sector admin roles and have seen good and bad in both. I've seen some complete arseholes of bosses in both, too, and presume longfingernails falls firmly into this category.

Troll thread or is OP just a complete tosser?
