What does being a district councillor entail?

Does anyone have any experience of being a district councillor? I have been asked to stand and need to get an idea of how it would impact on my family life before I make a decision.

Thanks. :)

There is some useful info here

and

here

If it were for your local Parish Council - I would say go for it.

but District Councillor is alot more involved and would cover an area of Parishes. You would need to attend as many as possible of those Parish Council meetings (usually in the evening) to know what was going on in your patch. You would be the contact to the district for all their woes.

Also contact the district council - they usually have really helpful paperwork just before the local elections.

Thank you ever so much Furball, that's really helpful. :)

It might be an idea to become a Parish Councillor though, you'd then get a feel for it and if you wanted to proceed you'd know more about it. Smile

Alot of Parishes are short of Councillors, depending on the size of the Parish it shouldn't impact too much, but you are still 'doing your bit' for the area.

it means doing sweet F A whilst filling your pockets with mega bucks

thereiver - Councillors at this level do not get a salary at all so your thought is totally wrong

"Councillors are not paid a salary or wages, but may be entitled to allowances and expenses for attending meetings or for taking on special responsibilities. They are not council employees. The elected Councillors provide the policies, and then paid employees (council officers) put them into practice."

Hmm therivier, I 'work' for my community council for approximately 7 hours a week at the moment for the princely sum of £0.00 an hour.

Sorry loopyloops was momentarily rather angered by another poster. I am a Community Councillor (equiv of Parish here in Wales) It is an upaid yet elected position which I really enjoy and would recommend to anyone. We meet once a month for approx three hours and you can do as much or as little as you like. I have set up a website for the village, and helped fund raise and organize the building of a £70,000 playground which is one of my proudest moments. We also have a Monday morning litter pick/gardening possy which I really enjoy. I would tell anyone to go for it, you meet great characters, learn how to debate points and learn loads, it's given me a lot of confidence that I had lost when I stopped working full time.
