Save Our Buses

As reported on the BBC news here:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-12349621

local councils are planning to cut bus services all over the UK.

Thankfully, the very wonderful Campaign for Better Transport, which has a website here:

www.bettertransport.org.uk/campaigns/save-our-buses/map?gclid=COeEpIjE66YCFcxO4QodTVSqGA

has put together links for every area in the country, showing you which buses are going to be cut and giving links to groups already campaigning against this in your area, or encouraging you to start your own. I can't find any overall national petition on this - maybe I've just not spotted one, or maybe it's because it's a local issue so national petitions would not be much use?

Please do read and take action - those of us, like me or like many older people who do not drive and live in rural areas NEED the buses and would be literally stuck, unable to get to work/shops etc without them.

A call for action!

It is already not feasable to live where my parents live without a car. Elderly people and those who are unable to drive will end up trapped in their homes or forced out of their communities. Bloody wrong. Angry

Thanks for sharing this Granted.

Many rural areas don't seem to have any buses
How they can cut them is beyond me. In parts of rural England, I've visited there is normally only one bus an hour, at the most. Will certainly sign up against this. Smile

Years ago, in Sheffield, they did an experiment, only charging 20p, I think for every journey. Anyone else remember that?

Another great post, Granted. Off to join the campaign.

The problem is business will not run money losing services without a subsidy.

Councils are having their grants cut and the Tories dont see transport as their problem.

Singinginmychains · 03/02/2011 17:56

Newwave, of course, definitely need subsidies.

Public transport is a service that we pay our taxes for. But if you take away (ie privatise) the universities, schools, hospitals, and buses, what are we paying taxes for? Maybe we should refuse to pay if the government doesn't provide the services? Smile

Community-run minibuses? (But paid for by taxes). Not, repeat not, an invitation to private companies.

I think our taxes are going to buy the bankers another yacht, aren't they?

Or did I miss something there. I wonder.
