Do you regret it or do you think the government are doing what they said on their tin?

My Reasons for not Voting Tory - A Late-Night Ramble

  1. I dislike the rabid pursuit of money we see today
  2. I think people should look after others before themselves
  3. I think people should if possible not be made miserable
  4. That means looking after the vulnerable and sick
  5. I don't think anyone needs more than £50k per year
  6. In fact, I don't think anyone really EARNS that in a year, whatever they may actually be paid
  7. The minimum wage is truly a civilised thing, and the Tories tried to stop it I recall
  8. To each according to their need, from each according to their ability
  9. The Tories are not interested in stopping tax fraud among their friends
  10. As we should all know now, the 6 billion pounds unpaid by Vodafone would clear most of the deficit overnight
  11. But of course then we wouldn't need the cuts... so we must suppose that Tories like to cut, presumably for ideological reasons
  12. I like the NHS as it is - with patient satisfaction up from 55% to 71% under Labour
  13. See MN's unanimous thread the other day against the proposed NHS demolition
  14. Unanimous except for someone called Chil who pops up so quickly on political threads I wonder whether she/he has a professional interest
  15. I like to see manifesto pledges kept to
  16. Of course no party is perfect, but the Tories slogan seems to be "breakapledgeaday"
  17. Tuition fees, scaring those from poorer backgrounds off applying for a degree (which I have witnessed)
  18. The demonisation of mostly peaceful protests
  19. Cancelling EMA, which will mean about 60,000 less sixth formers, for very little saving
  20. ...meaning that even if poorer students were willing to get £27k in debt for a degree, lack of A Levels will prevent them applying
  21. ...so this "pro-choice" government is only pro-choice as far as students are concerned, provided they're middle or upper-class
  22. The Tories are aligned to far-right parties in Europe
  23. Cameron said his would be a green government. What has he done?
  24. The rise in VAT has been denounced (by those independent bodies who know) as unfair on poorer families
  25. I could go on all night but I have to go to bed!

X

Standing ovation here for Fatherbrianeno!!!

I would suggest we start our own party but as all parties allegedly start out with good intentions and then spectacularly foul things up I have to admit I don't know if I could do it!!

Next idea - mass infiltration of existing parties and persuade them all to change their entire world view.

And no, I'm not religious, and I'm not deluded.

Sigh.

I'm really beginning to understand that it is the compartmentalisation and fragmentation of people that does the most harm. It is confused with being individual.

It's perfectly possible to be unique yet part of a group. But we aren't taught that. We're taught to fit in first, then display the individual things that other people will tolerate / approve of.

As long as people don't harm each other, and value themselves equally with each other nothing else should matter.

You may say we do that already in the name of "diversity" and "inclusion". But it's not the same. That's "management" speak that treats people as manageable commodities.

Oh, I could go on and on, but seeing as when I try to talk about this sort of thing to my nearest and dearest they roll their eyes and smile tolerantly, I get a bit wary of sharing even though I have a huge urge to!!

So I'll just go and let the dog out and put the kettle on.

Cuppa anyone?

fatherbrianeno · 20/01/2011 17:01

Thanks TK, if nothing else it's good to feel you're not alone.

catinthehat2 · 20/01/2011 23:17

"10) As we should all know now, the 6 billion pounds unpaid by Vodafone would clear most of the deficit overnight" that is one of the funniest things I've read on here in the last few weeks. unfortunately I think you actually believe this sort of stuff so I'll leave you to it. Good laugh tho' thanks!

newwave · 21/01/2011 01:09

Cat, no it would not have cleared the debt but it would have paid for EMA or the respite care that is now being slashed, still better the Vodaphone profits are increased.

fatherbrianeno · 21/01/2011 08:24

Fair enough, I needed to say 'cuts' rather than 'deficit'.

www.johannhari.com/2011/01/17/you-pay-your-taxes-or-go-to-prison-unless-you-are-super-rich-or-a-corporation

But you can't deny that the Tories are letting these people off huge amounts. If you don't even believe the well known point about Vodafone then just Google the words Vodafone 6 billion.

magicbutterfly · 21/01/2011 09:14

What is most selfish of all is Labour racking up debts for this generation that the next five, at least, will have to pay off.

Longfingernails. And the present government have carried on borrowing even more money without creating one single new job.

MollysChambers · 21/01/2011 09:30

No I did not vote Tory.

I'm Scottish.

It's against the law to vote Tory in Scotland.

As it should be.

Have never been more grateful for devolution. Affords us some protection..

I feel no need to justify the existance of my nation within the United Kingdom to you as, frankly, I couldn't care less if you are unhappy with the Union as it stands.

Sincere apologies if I have offended you by suggesting you may be inclined to vote Tory. I should have known better as I would certainly be very upset if someone suggested that I would do such a thing. I at no point suggested that you may be a fully paid up member however. That would be a vicious slur on anyones character and I could never stoop so low, even with the anonymity of the internet to hide behind.

newwave · 21/01/2011 15:32

Molly, :o :o

How about all the North sea profits being returned to Scotland, Thatcher spent most of them in the South East whilst ravaging Scotland and the North.

electra · 21/01/2011 16:49

No, at best their ideology is flawed and at worst they are unprincipled fascists. No way will I ever vote for them.....

MollysChambers · 21/01/2011 17:02

Newwave - That bloody woman has a lot to answer for. No doubt wee white pussy will be along momentarily to proclaim his adoration.

KnittedBreast · 24/01/2011 11:22

hmm, no i didnt vote for the tories and i never will. Id rather sell my own arse.

GabbyLoggon · 24/01/2011 11:36

No I dont vote Tory....

I think their present Home Secretary was right when she referred to her party as the "Nasty party"

There are individual famous Tories I can tolerate. But not vote for them.

Heroine · 24/01/2011 11:54

Tory philosphy involves a massive blind spot. Its much easier to determine your life choices, make sensible decisions, earn more, look after yourself, etc if you have more resources to start with. Most 'survival of the fittest' types recoil in horror if you suggest (as socialists do) that the starting point is equal, which would really determine the fittest and best. What the tories really advocate is 'increased development opportunity for those who already have the resources at the moment, but we'll let some people in who didn't have money to start with as long as they have made enough money to look like one of us (i.e have shafted more people than we thought feasible with our already stacked cards).

Its a buggers muddle it really is. Anyone can choose the job they want and the education they want if they can a) live for free whilst they do so b) get paid a lot when they get there and c) are helped over any difficult patches by the other wealthy people they know.

Choosing to change jobs so you can make a greater contribution when you can't even afford a month off in case you lose the house you have been paying for for ten years, and need to keep relentlessy paying for for another 15, and can't quite get tot he end of the month because you gave in and had breakfast at wetherspoons.

I don't think tories really udnerstand how stacked things are - if you haven't gone to a school that gave you fake 'leadership' experience, that you can't put on your CV EVEN IF YOU HAVE STRONG LEADERSHIP SKILLS you are likely to not be given a leadership role you are paid for until 10 years later.. y which time those who did, will have '10 years professional leadership experience' - when people are working hand to mouth through college and in their first six jobs (typical amongst the low-waged), its hard to then jump to a tory-level professional job EVEN IF YOU HAVE THE QUALIFICATIONS AND ATTRIBUTES so its not all about will, drive, ability, choice etc. It IS for people whose families are constituted of people with spare income every month, but it ISN't for those who don't.

Heroine · 24/01/2011 11:54

Re north sea profits - they wouldn't have been extracted at all if it were left solely up to scottish companies..

Heroine · 24/01/2011 11:58

Oh yes and the banks join in- if you are wealthy and want to borrow thousands to send your kids through private school, you pay typically less than 6% on that loan. If you are poor and you borrow money, the typical rate is 28- 36%. People at the bottom are borrowing money to hide the fact that their employers are paying them less than living costs - people at the top are borrowing money that makes them more money - typically by investing their money in businessses who make money by paying staff at the bottom too little to live on.. Are you getting it yet??

imright · 24/01/2011 13:15

Scotland is NOT a nation. Very welcome to become one! Don't take England's money with you when you do it!

Sauchiehall St? Oh yes the main shopping street of Glasgow!

Oh yes 'Smallwhitecat' you had better watch your tongue! As Glasgow is the 'stab capital of Europe' and one may find a pointed instrument up your jacksy!

I would never vote Tory, they are too left wing and PC! I'd rather vote UKIP.
