Is there no end to Clegg's hypocrisy - he did a Social Anthropology degree !

Staggering hypocrisy as he now is part author of plans to slash funding to social science, arts and humanities degrees.

He just gets worse in the hypocrisy stakes.

Osbourne too, for all his slagging off of humanities courses, did..........................................................Modern History.

What are these people on?

I hope they find themselves flat on their arses very very soon.

Are you sure? I didn't think they did Social Anthropology at Cambridge.

LadyBlaBlah · 09/12/2010 12:56

It's probably not something he is that proud of at the moment

But yes, it is true

Is the decision to cut central government funding for the soicial science and humanities not just a reflection of demand for university courses.

LadyBlaBlah · 09/12/2010 13:05

Or is it a subjective and moral stance on 'Mickey Mouse' degrees?

I don't think so, science courses are more expensive to deliver so in order to keep fees for both science and social science at the same level then the Government is going to have to make a contribution to funding science courses which they don't need to in order to fund social sciences.

claig · 09/12/2010 13:17

well he did keep telling us "you're the bosses", so what do you expect?

EatingAngelPie · 09/12/2010 13:19

why is tht hypocrisy?

i did philosophy. I know it is cheap to provide (next to, e.g chemistry, which requires lab equipment and chemicals)

claig · 09/12/2010 13:19

He also kept a straight face and managed to remember the audience's names. His social anthropology obviously paid off.

claig · 09/12/2010 13:21

then why will philosophy students at Oxford have to pay such high fees?

byrel · 09/12/2010 13:22

claig- to give Oxford more revenue

LadyBlaBlah · 09/12/2010 13:23

It is also a question of the commitment to research. It is pretty clear that there will be virtually no money left for humanities or social sciences research.

That is the hypocrisy. And that is why there is a subjective and moral stance to be argued here. They are saying social science research is unimportant.

next to, e.g chemistry, which requires lab equipment and chemicals).

The college's answer to this is to show you tube clips of experiments instead of doing them, great eh ?

claig · 09/12/2010 13:24

Why? To pay their philosophy lecturers more?

EatingAngelPie · 09/12/2010 13:38

possibly. more likely because it is worth it, and a philosophy degree from Oxfrod is more demanding than others (i suspect they want you to do more than 6 essays a term)..actually, i know someone who turne down their offer from cambridge for that reason...didn't want the work!

mamatomany the more an institution does that, the less the value of their degree....

there has always been bugger all funding for arts research, for the good reason that no business is interested in promoting it.

want science funding? get a good degree.
want arts funding? - get a good first

there was near-zero funding for arts research back in the nineties. the world carried on.

LadyBlaBlah · 09/12/2010 13:43

"there was near-zero funding for arts research back in the nineties. the world carried on."

And indeed the world will carry on when the funding is slashed again.
