So Cameron is appointing some mates into the House of Lords to make sure he has a majority there. Right, so that's how democracy works.

here

Charles Dunstone is one mentioned here, now correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't he on the gushing letter supporting the cuts last week?

Depressing stuff.

That's how the Lords works, surely? Concurrent administrations appoint 'their people' and, as a result, it's a more balanced chamber. Same thing happens in the US with the Supreme Court Judges.... presidents tend to nominate candidates with views that match their own. It's not democratic at all but that's a different discussion entirely.

It's not democratic.

Labour appointed dross like Baroness Uddin though.

In many ways (not all), it worked better when peerages were hereditary.

I think it is time for a mostly elected Lords, with elections by PR, and staggered like the US Senate.

What's more depressing is having people like John Prescott and Alan Sugar made into Lords. Not to even begin to mention Lord Mandelson.

Labour could at least choose decent people.

The Government has always appointed people into the House of Lords so I don't see why this is such a surprise.
Anyway the Coalition is drawing up plans to elect the House of Lords so it will probably only be temporary.
