cuts - Wednesday's Spending Review

Brace yourself ladies - these cuts are big, there will be tens of thousands of public sector redundancies and it's said (by the Fawcett Society amongst others) that they will disproportionately affect women.

Some workers will get some sort of payoff, and some will be pleased to go. Some will find new jobs.

But I reckon the overall effect (licks finger and holds it in the wind) will be to drive down women's wages, meaning that once you are made redundant from your public sector post you may find more work but it will be at a lower rate and the extra competition for jobs across the board will drive wages down across the board. This may be true for men as well but I think it will affect women - mums - more.

If you are watching the press coverage on Weds, what do you think the effects of the cuts and the job losses for women (and mums) will be?

They haven't mentioned short tenancies have they?

bedhed · 20/10/2010 13:00

Here we go, all those lazy sods sitting watching Jeremy Kyle whilst we all work our hands to the bone. Mmm. Wider welfare budget. interesting introduction.

LadyBlaBlah · 20/10/2010 13:00

Wonder if he is going to go after himself for that unpaid tax?

Lotofdamnationandhellfire · 20/10/2010 13:00

ISNT - go to bbc website.

alicatte · 20/10/2010 13:00

NI NI NI

molemesses · 20/10/2010 13:01

How can cutting all these jobs save money and help the economy?

people loose jobs claim jsa, council tax etc..surely thats making things worse?

more competion for fewer jobs, people not spending as they cant afford too...it's all going to have a knock on effect.

I just cant see how we are going to avoid a double dip recession.

ISNT · 20/10/2010 13:01

Why did they all just smirk in unison?

BLAST this BBC coverage

LadyBlaBlah · 20/10/2010 13:02

Shall we just have a revolution now?

zoelikesjam · 20/10/2010 13:02

agree WAIB, we live in a housing ass' property, which costs about £340month, if we went private, a house the same size same area would be about £650...so going on the 80% twoddle this place would cost us £520...hubby would have to do extra hours to afford that.

Im watching it on ITV, its no different is it?

alicatte · 20/10/2010 13:02

Actually - to be fair, I was told this when I was 18 years old. I have always expected to work until 70 ish.

MaMoTTaT · 20/10/2010 13:02

bythemoonlight - I'm sure in PMQ's I heard him say something about no short tenancies??

caramelwaffle · 20/10/2010 13:02

State Pension Age UP - 68

Meh - I have been informed of this in my pension statements for the past few years already...not exactly news

ISNT · 20/10/2010 13:02

I'm ON the BBC website!

Why are they all pissing themselves laughing? Have they just announced the new poor baby drowing policy?

Tootlesmummy · 20/10/2010 13:02

Honestly what do people expect to happen to reduce the deficit?

pompadourprincess · 20/10/2010 13:03

Intermediate Tenancy which means not a life one anymore , well that what it sounds like to me

alicatte · 20/10/2010 13:03

Told you. Not exactly NI but higher pension contributions.

Tootlesmummy · 20/10/2010 13:04

The increase in state pension age will happen earlier than originally expected.

Simbacat · 20/10/2010 13:04

Hmm Nick cleggs future is interesting. Will they try and stick him in a safe seat (actually they probably don't have any). My colleague is very active in his constituency- knows him and used to think he was god- now her entire family of 4 adults who voted for him are very clear they wouldn't again.

Still he can write a book!

Jcee · 20/10/2010 13:04

They've said intermediate rents which usually means short term

Tootlesmummy · 20/10/2010 13:04

MP's final salary pension looks likely to be binned.

ISNT · 20/10/2010 13:04

This social housing changes + benefit cap is the bit that has me upset.

Stephanie falnders on BBC just described what they are setting up as a "ticking time bomb"

byrel · 20/10/2010 13:04

Nick Cleggs seat is a safe seat

LadyBlaBlah · 20/10/2010 13:05

Benefit fraud is not £ 5bn as he claims. It is £ 1bn

On DWP website

He tells real lies

bytheMoonlight · 20/10/2010 13:05

zoelikesjam · 20/10/2010 13:05
