cuts - Wednesday's Spending Review

Brace yourself ladies - these cuts are big, there will be tens of thousands of public sector redundancies and it's said (by the Fawcett Society amongst others) that they will disproportionately affect women.

Some workers will get some sort of payoff, and some will be pleased to go. Some will find new jobs.

But I reckon the overall effect (licks finger and holds it in the wind) will be to drive down women's wages, meaning that once you are made redundant from your public sector post you may find more work but it will be at a lower rate and the extra competition for jobs across the board will drive wages down across the board. This may be true for men as well but I think it will affect women - mums - more.

If you are watching the press coverage on Weds, what do you think the effects of the cuts and the job losses for women (and mums) will be?

Sorry Smokey - I now realie you know who it is. I ha;f reading another post at the same time.

Apologies.

pagwatch · 20/10/2010 13:47

Lol at 'Justine I think she's called...'

claig · 20/10/2010 13:47

but he managed to fit the word progressive into the pack of lies, so he is not all bad

smokeybacon · 20/10/2010 13:47

Ed M looks like he is about to burst into tears!

caramelwaffle · 20/10/2010 13:48

whyoamibothering - if you are working c 16 hours per week, you could create your own business (fully registered with Companies House), work at this more than 8 hours per week, post your profits/losses - accounts etc- each year and claim you WTC based on your employed/self employed basis.

Research your options fully.

HTH

molemesses · 20/10/2010 13:48

I know Pagwatch - I'm only half reading the threads and half trying to work out how it's going to affect me.

alicatte · 20/10/2010 13:49

Ed Miliband does look unhappy - but then they all look a bit grim.

claig · 20/10/2010 13:49

Even Ed Miliband doesn't understand what Bronson is saying, but he does nod when he hears the word 'progressive'

1340: BBC education correspondent Sean Coughlan says: The education maintenance allowances for 16 to 18-year-olds, costing £564m per year, is to be replaced by "more targeted" support? but the commitment to raising the school leaving age to 18 remains.

I thought EMA was targeted already!!

MaMoTTaT · 20/10/2010 13:50

god how can they sit and laugh and joke like monkeys when vast swathes of the country are going to suffer as a result of the cuts today

uyter · 20/10/2010 13:50

Labour are in total denial about the dire state of the public finances. Debt interest payments that are going to rise to £64 billion is a disgrace. This needs to be stopped and it looks like the coalition is going to do it.

alicatte · 20/10/2010 13:50

Oh crikey - is that true?

alicatte · 20/10/2010 13:52

Thank you Andrew Neil

MaMoTTaT · 20/10/2010 13:52

uyter - they may well cut the public debt deficit - but at what cost to families and children around the country??

Tootlesmummy · 20/10/2010 13:52

They should all be ashamed as to how they behaved in the house today.

uyter · 20/10/2010 13:52

Its what Osbourne said. They are currently £43 billion a year so it sounds believable

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-11569160

Helpful summary for anyone like me who seemed to miss bits here and there.

Tootlesmummy · 20/10/2010 13:54

MaMo I share your concerns but I want there to be something left, we can't keep paying out the amounts we're paying in interest payments. It's not sustainable.

bytheMoonlight · 20/10/2010 13:55

No I don't think so Frigggght.

Your rent will be increased to 80% of Market Rate. You can still claim HB to cover the cost of this, up the capped amount.

I think.

molemesses · 20/10/2010 13:55

Why hasnt the VAT on fags and booze gone up?

Would it not be better to make money on something that is costing the NHS millions a year and encouraging people to give up these things by pricing them out than to cut something that's needed like the 4% on police and fire that he's just cut?

DuelingFanjo · 20/10/2010 13:55

is it my imagination or is GO talking complete bollox and not answering any questions put to him? Confused

alicatte · 20/10/2010 13:55

What I mean uyter is that so far that is perhaps the only justification for the speed. If it isn't true which is what Alan Johnson has just claimed then this does look suspiciously 'ideological' and it could have been done in a gentler way which would have avoided a lot of pain.

whyamibothering · 20/10/2010 13:56

Thanks caramelwaffle - I am going to have to do something.

My husband was made redundant and took the only job he was offered. Over the years they have cut his hours and cut his hours. He refused to work less than 16 hours because of the WTC requirements. So he works at minimum wage for 16 hours and we receive WTC and TC

I dont work because we survive - we have a 16 year old son, and also due to the fact that I have a 99 year old grandma who I care for, shop for. She is completely independent of social services and lives alone with my help. I do not receive carers allowance because there wouldnt be any point being that WTC would be affected and too much paperwork. We dont claim housing benefit because we live in a property that the mortgage has been paid on and in that respect we are fortunate.

Now I am quite prepared to do 8 hours work somewhere to now qualify for WTC and let's face it when dear nan does pass away I will have all the time in the world to do so. I just wondered when the timescale for implementing all this would be. I know it cant be overnight.

Will have to look into the self employment thing, although I hope this doesnt cost too much. Just wondered when this all comes into effect

And also what the EMA is going to be replaced with

bytheMoonlight · 20/10/2010 13:56

Cant find anything about EMA, did he mention it?

DuelingFanjo · 20/10/2010 13:56

omg, this is so embarrassing! Do the Tories think that GO is a good person to have speaking for them?!
