That's it really (sorry bfing at same time). My knowledge of social politics is non existent. Why do they call him red ed?

red- socialist.

BessieBoots · 28/09/2010 18:48

Sorry, that dash should have been an equals sign. Duh!

Bumperlicious · 28/09/2010 18:51

Can you elaborate (v ignorant)?

his policies are more left wing than his brothers so it was a "clever" nickname conjoured up by the murdoch press to scare people into thinking he is some sort of comunist who will destroy the country and encourage strikes that will bring the country t its knees.

Litchick · 28/09/2010 18:59

but lissielou - he is pretty left wing. The press aren't making that bit up.

OracleInaCoracle · 28/09/2010 19:03

he is pretty left wing and does seem to herald a return to old labour, but there is a big difference wanting to stand up for the working classes and being a communist.

Litchick · 28/09/2010 19:08

I took red to idicate socialist - which I think privately Ed would agree he is.

huddspur · 28/09/2010 20:22

Red is the colour of socialism so I think it is a suggestion that Ed Miliband will move the Labour party to the left on the political spectrum.

OracleInaCoracle · 28/09/2010 20:27

tbh, i have issue at all with ed moving the party to the left, they need to re-engage with their values, but the way it is being portrayed in the press is as if its a bad thing.

alicatte · 28/09/2010 20:43

It is just an assonant play on the name Ed.
Assonance and Alliteration seem to have a life of their own in the British press.

Personally I believe it doesn't mean anything, although perhaps, and probably totally unfairly, it is meant to IMPLY some form of 'danger' and to remind people of his Marxist parentage. Perhaps he should start calling himself Edward - is his name Edward? I don't actually know.

poppymouse · 28/09/2010 20:49

Alicatte, everyone else is definitely right and you, unfortunately, are definitely wrong.

jackstarbright · 28/09/2010 20:52

Edward Samuel - apparently

alicatte · 28/09/2010 20:59

Oh well thanks for that PM - just trying to keep an open mind. I am rather sceptical about all this name calling.

duckyfuzz · 28/09/2010 21:02

he's only left wing compared to Blair and co, but by his own admission is far from the left winger his father was

hit the nail on the head there. his dad was a marxist and disappointed that his sons joined the labour party because it was too right wing Grin

tabbymoomoo · 29/09/2010 10:56

Labour are a socialist party. Ed is leftwing.

But this is good for women and we should all be voting for labour because they are the founders of; the two weeks of referral for all
patients with breast problems, opened surestart centres, flexible
working for parents, national minimum wage, working tax credit,9 months paid maternity,Free nursery provision, fairer pension system.
for women, funded 36 Sexual Assault Referral Centres and
expanded the number of domestic violence
courts,96 women
MPs, NHS, £370 million to deliver
improved short break services for families with
disabled children. The list goes on and on. socailism means equality.

I'm off my soapbox now:o

Ed Millliband is the son of the Marxist academic Adolf (Ralph) Milliband. Have you heard the song "keep the red flag flying" well that song equates to Ed Millaband, and Ken Livingstone, as they are both Left wing Marxists. "Comrades" is the catchword for both of the above. Grin

alicatte · 29/09/2010 19:09

But you know my parents were 'hippy' and academic and I am possibly the most personally conservative person I know. Your parents do not define you - even if you love them to bits (as I do). Time rolls on and circumstances change. It does seem odd to see Labour moving leftwards, seems more like rolling back. Then what do I know.
