Have your thoughts on PR changed since the election?

Just interested really.

I'm wondering if anyone who was in favour of proportional representation before the election is reconsidering how they'd vote in a referendum in the light of the current coalition's plans and actions so far?

I was strongly in favour of a more representative method of electing, but I'm having some serious doubts now.

Yes I have doubts too. I think the Libdems have let voters down by backing the tories. I know several life long labour voters who voted for them this time, and now regret it.

Are we going to get the chance to vote in a referendum on this? I will need some convincing now regarding PR.

Opinion polls are one thing. Nick Clegg and co. must be praying there are no bi-elections in the near future.

I suppose many of them didn't realise that a Lib-Con coalition would essentially end up being a Conservative govt under a different name. While I'm sure the LibDems would argue that they've moderated much of what was in the Tory manifesto, it's hard to see that they are having much of an impact.

Notagranny - yes I think there's going to be a referendum next year(?) isn't there? Possibly coinciding with local elections in the spring.

No, of course you're right, giddypickle, I suppose it's just seeing the reality of what it would be like in action that gives me pause. That, as you said earlier, you vote without really knowing what you'll end up with. Naively, I hadn't really looked beyond the 'fairness' of the system until now I guess.

However, I'm not sure I agree that what we have now is 'representative of most people's views', because I don't think it represents the views of many Libdems, many of whom voted libdem in order to keep the tories out, as I understand it.

Interesting times.

oh i thought you mean public relations and i was going to rant about how dave seems to have handed all the bad news breaking to nick clegg, even though dave himself had a pr career Hmm

that's OK, SEA. Rant away. Grin

Meanwhile, callmedave gets to do all the nice holidays and babies stuff. Ha.

LibDem conference might be interesting (and wouldn't that be a turn up for the books).

Yes. I've decided that if First Past the Post means Lib Dems have little chance of ever getting elected again, it has a lot going for it.

notagrannyyet · 26/08/2010 10:43

Yes I think the same. Before the election I did think some form of PR would be a good thing.

GabbyLoggon · 26/08/2010 14:26

I would like genuine PR given a try.
But they may not even win the vote for AB
(tories hate it)
