After sniping at Jamie Oliver and his ambitions to improve school meals, then pulling back from restricting use of killer ingredients in food production, including trans fats, the government is now seeking to abolish the Food Standards Agency. This is the body that was brought it after the deregulation of the Food Industry led to BSE entering the food chain, which in turn led to a crisis of confidence in the food we eat.

Isn't it great to know that the market principles which led to the collapse of the banks, BP oil disaster (not to mention scandals in the past such as lying over the effects of tobacco, Thalidamide etc) are now going to apply, once again to the food we eat.

That is depressing maria. I suspect you are right.

Perhaps at the Ministry of Ag and Fish they will have a Automaton of the little Gummer. Just stick a Euro in the slot and watch him shove a mad cow burger in his poor innocent daughters face.

It could be scaled up to show the current incumbent shoving some equally poisonous chunk into our collective gobs. Followed by us saying 'Thank you Sir, may we have some more.'

I think this is a very significant indication into how this administration views the electorate. We don't give a damn!!!!

Because everything is on the labels and if I'm too thick to understand then that's my tough luck.

'Cos of course when I bought my half a dozen eggs in 1990 they were labelled, contains salmonella and but I just ignored it. Then when I picked up some eye and arse burgers that said contains BSE - thought WTF is BSE, sounds lovely, bought them and fed 'em my 3 year old.

Of course - it's so simple - just read the f label.

Absolutely abolish the FSA. WTF!

Here are some quotes taken from an interesting book called "PERFECTLY SAFE TO EAT? The Facts on Food" by Vicki Herd:

"Experts have long considered that the answer to the persistent problems in the food system is to create an independent food agency. Such an agency should be responsible for food safety and standards, thereby removing these responsibilites from MAFF and making the whole system more integrated and coherent.
The main objective of the agency is to protect public health from risks which may arise in connection with the consumption of food (including risks caused by the way in which it is produced and supplied) and otherwise and to protect the imterests of consumers in relation to food'

Its work will be completely open to the public gaze"

With no FSA where do we go for open, honest and transparency in relation to food safety and standards? I fear there will be a conflict of interest without such an agency.
