I am looking for something to read, less academic and more spriritual. I know there are books out there that deal with peoples journeys or personal stories etc.

Just wondered if anyone had any good recommendations?

Anything by John Ortberg. He is American, talks about real life issues, experiences. He's also very funny.

One of my fave of his is, 'Everyone is Normal Until you get to Know them.'

The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom - oldie but goodie. The Elisabeth Elliott ones? Through Gates of Splendour or Shadow of the Almighty?

Mary Baker Eddy

A Lineage of Grace which retells stories of famous Bible women characters as fuller stories, so you really emapthise with them. I was particularly taken with the story of Rahab and how she became a prostitute, but was in the line of Christ and her story is relevant. Easy to read but good to think about, with a bible study after each story if you want it.

I always enjoy "real life" stories of people living through real situation, eg Joni, Corrie Ten Boom etc.

Captivating is very good. Makes you look at yourself again. Sacred Cows Make a Good Barbecue (or something like that) is pretty good. Joyce Meyer is always good for a read as well.

I really didn't like the Shack, at all. I completely failed to see what all the fuss was about.

Oh yes, stressed I agree with you about Captivating, wish I'd thought of that one. Joyce Meyer is also interesting.

Good ideas so far.

See I don't like Joyce Meyer (she makes me want to gouge my own eyes out actaully) or John Otberg. Maybe just me!!

Would recommend Philip Yancey - What's So Amazing About Grace, or if you want a more personal story, Soul Survivor.

I fantastic spiritual Biography is "A Smile on the Face of God" by Adrian Plass - about a friend of his who was a minister. Also biographies of Hudson Taylor, and "Chasing the Dragon", by Jackie Pullinger.

A very short, easy to read book I read years ago which touched me really deeply is "People in Prayer" by John White - looking at examples of people praying in the Bible from Abraham to Jesus.

If you are looking for something more devotional I can't recommend David Adam highly enough. The best one is "The Eye of the Eagle" - its meditations on the hymn "Be Thou My Vision" and is fantastic, he's written several others as well. Another book in the same vein that I found very interesting and really changed my perspective was "Restoring the Woven Cord" by Michael Mitton - its all about rediscovering the roots of Celtic Christianity and is a fascinating read.

Stepping Heavenward by Elizabeth Prentiss is AMAZING. Fictional diary but beautiful, touching, inspiring etc [gush].
