Yip, that pretty much sums up how it happens for me. Took me a long while to realise though

"Believing what the imagination tells you is the starting point"

That sounds like dangerous advice to me.

Revelry · 23/06/2010 11:32

Same for me. I still have times when I think "am I just making this up", but more and more I'm trusting that when I just know something, or a thought just pops into my head and it feels right, then it's guidance.

AMumInScotland · 23/06/2010 11:49

Interesting, but I think it misses out a vital step, where you decide whether the thought (whether it comes from yourself or outside) is something which is a positive and "good" idea, or something harmful.

If you don't weigh things up against some sort of moral judgement, then simply following every thought/prompt that you experience will not lead you to make good decisions.

Whether you believe that this kind of prompting comes from a spirit world outside of yourself or not, not every idea is a good one!

indigobarbie · 23/06/2010 12:17

I understand what you are saying muminscotland.

I think that if you can discern for yourself what you believe to be a good idea or not a good idea then you will only be guided by what you feel is good, if that's what you want to follow.

I think I tend to follow my gut instinct on things and generally it works out well. I do have ideas for myself and don't attribute all of them to spirit or guidance.

AMumInScotland · 23/06/2010 12:35

My concern with people or articles who say "Just follow your imagination" or "Odd thoughts that pop up from nowhere are from your spirit guide" is that not everyone who reads them will be sane and sensible! There are, unfortunately, people who have odd thoughts which are dangerous to themselves and/or others, and there's nothing in this article which says to them "And always check with logic/morality before deciding what to do about them".

Most people of course can tell whether thoughts which come to them are a bad idea - we generally have a filter which does that, so if you have recurring thoughts about flying, you look at having hang-gliding lessons, not jumping off a tall building. But it's a bit irresponsible not to point that out when saying "follow your imagination", when some people lack the filter which says "within reason".

Revelry · 23/06/2010 12:56

Yes, I understand what you're saying too AMIS and why you'd say that.

I don't find that my thoughts/guidance are very instructional, it's hard to describe but it's more like having a jigsaw puzzle and you're given the pieces one by one and eventually a picture unfolds. Same for any guidance I get for other people. And lots of it tends to be about connecting with feelings and emotions that aren't doing them any good and releasing them. So it's not that I get thoughts that say "take all your clothes off and go and swim naked in the river" or that I'd tell someone "you HAVE to leave this man" - it's more about a journey and helping with it. Not sure I've explained that very well, but it makes sense to me .

AMumInScotland · 23/06/2010 13:13

Oh I get what you mean, it's just the people who read the article who do have thoughts like "jump in the river", won't see anything in it which says "Actually, you have a problem, don't do that". The people who might be reading it may not have the background to know that it ought to be about guidance/journey.

I guess you can't put a whole explanation on every article, but when you read one piece eg on the internet it can be taken as confirming things which it didn't mean to.

Revelry · 23/06/2010 13:17

Yes, I guess that's the danger of stuff like that being available on the internet. While I can read it totally in context with what I do on a daily basis, not everyone one will.

SolidGoldBrass · 29/06/2010 00:36

Surely it missed the important bit out - 'If your spirit guide is telling you to send us woo peddlers all your money, then that's a sign you are ready to make further progress...@
