christening gown question

Hello

Don't know if this is the right place to ask this, but I bought a beautiful Victorian christening dress off ebay for my daughter and it's going to be a surprise for all the grandparents etc, but its REALLY long! I knew they were supposed to be long, but this is twice as long as my daughter!!! Do you think this is excessive, if so I will get her something else. She looks lovely and it fits her up top, but I don't know if she might look a bit ridiculous!!!

Please help as I can't ask anyone, it's supposed to be a surprise!!!

I think that they are meant to be that long.

Yes, I would say its normal. AND they used to put boys as well as girls in them. It sounds gorgeous, you MUST use it!!

Yes, they're meant to be long. We're very lucky in our family, we have the family christening gown which was made for my great great aunt in 1912 and because it's been so well looked after it's still as fresh as the day it was made. It is beautiful, we've all worn it to be christened in

Use the gown, as others have said, it is meant to be long. You didn't mention her age? Before standing age is ideal! You can change her soon after. Looks lovey in photographs, all draped etc (sorry vicar, I know that's not the point) but family records of gatherings are important.

Thanks she is 5 months today, but is quite diddy. It is literally twice as long as her and she likes to curl her legs up so she just looks like a head in an enormous (but very beautiful) dress! When I hold her in a cradle position it drapes over my arm and down to my knees... although I am only 5'2". I know they are meant to be long but just don't know if it's too long, does anyone know how to link a photo, I could show you then...

Look at Royal Christenings! Honestly, the longer the better, enjoy it all.

My 3 have all worn the 1860 gown my MIL has had passed down. I think my children are the 5th generation to wear it.

I was a bit worried that DS2 wouldn't fit in it for his baptism at 4 months, but he did - just! That's all to do with the chest size, though - it's very long.

OK see what you mean about the royal weddings but beautiful as my dd is... can we pull it off!

Of course you can! If you add a profile, you can add pictures to your profile, then we can see it in all its glory!

HiccupsAllDay · 19/06/2010 09:56

OK I've added a profile and included a photo so let me know what you think!!!
