First Holy Communion - missal recommendation?

My dd makes her First Holy Communion next month. I was hoping to get her a missal or suchlike. Does anyone have any recommendations please, preferably to buy online? Thanks.

Don't know any on-line sites, but there must be some - however - the Catholic Churches I have attended have all had a book stall / repository where they sell bibles, missals, rosarys etc etc all in time for the First Holy Communicion season. Doesn't your church have such a thing?

They are also usually way cheaper from the church than in Christian Bookshops.

Thanks messymissy, there was nothing really inspiring at church, book-wise. There's only 7 of them making their First Holy Communion (which is about 5 more than last year!) so I don't think our church is generally that geared up to the First Holy Communion season.

Don't forget that the new translation of the Mass is coming out imminently and all the current missals will be obsolete so it might not be worth buying a really nice one now.

As for websites, I've used these in the past:
www.southwellbooks.com/index.asp
www.cenacle.co.uk/index.htm

The top one in particular is v. nice, friendly and efficient. Quite trad so they sell a lot of EF missals, which means you'll have to read the descriptions carefully (or they both offer a phone service) to make sure that you're buying an ordinary form (non-Latin) missal.

Oh, thank you Fink, good point, didn't realise it was coming in quite so quickly. Might just get a prayer book or something, in the first instance then. Are there many changes I'm a bit ignorant with it all really?

Sorry for slow reply.

It's unclear exactly when it's coming - last year they said maybe this year but that looks unlikely, I would think probably next year.

The translation isn't too different, it's the odd word and sentence here and there but imo it's still worth waiting for a new missal, up to you of course.

My DC's got beautiful Rosary beads from their Godmother when they made their First Holy Communion. We then had them blessed by the Priest. Also they got a beautiful bookmark each with a golden silk tassle and a prayer written for their Day on them.

Yes, DD got lots of nice pressies for her Baptism which would have suited an older child, so there is nice holy stuff out there. I really like the felt dolls of saints, so you get one for their name saint (or choose a patron to match their personality if they haven't got a saint's name) but assuming your DD is about 7-8 she might think they're childish.

Also, have you considered a holding cross(they're only a couple of £ so obviously not a main present)? Even secondary kids like them as a tactile way to pray.

Or a religious charm bracelet, or one of those craft kits so she can make her own holy cards, or a guardian angel to hang over her bed, and of course there are hundreds of cool children's books. I can't wait until DD's a bit older and I can buy her all these .

I can look out a couple of more modern websites for you if you're interested, I used to know them but they're saved as favourites on my work computer rather than home and I'm on mat leave atm so don't have access to it. Otherwise, if your parish is no good, if you've got time to go to the cathedral they'd probably have a good selection.

Thanks for all your suggestions, some great ideas. Yes please to those websites Fink, if it's not too much trouble .

Sorry for the slow reply, I was trying to look out the websites.

Unfortunately, one of the good websites is closed for refurbishment, and I can't find the other one.

There's:
www.pauline-uk.org, which is good for both books and gifts, but their website doesn't seem to do the non-books.

www.cts-online.org.uk/ is also good, although as it is a publisher, I think it only sells its own publications.
