... the religion of a group of women I keep encountering at school gates, local supermarkets, etc. I'm familiar with many denominations but this has puzzled me for a while.
So, basically their dress code is a longish skirt, longsleeved top/ cardigan , long hair and a small triangular kerchief. All I encountered were white women.
I live in Buckinghamshire and there seems to be quite a large number of them around.

I live in Northern Ireland and there are a few in my local area. Here, they are called Closed Brethren, but that might just be a NI term and CaptainNancy might be right with the correct name.

They sound like some variety of anabaptists - could be bruderhof/hutterite?
I think the only Mennonite church in the UK is in London

However I understood that they mostly went in for home-schooling or at least their own community schools.

Thanks, I spent over an hour researching and have come to conclusion that indeed they are Plymouth Brethren.

Wasn't obvious at first as there is quite a lot of variety of beliefs/conduct within , not all assemblies adhere to the dress code I described.

As to homeschooling, apparently, some of them are fine with sending children to primary school, but not to preschool, and not at secondary level.

And most of them shun the internet, so no wonder no mumsnetter joined to say 'It's us!'

I live in Bucks too, Daisymeadow. There are always a lot of them about. I see them with their daughters dressed the same way as mum.
They are always well-behaved. I like the long hair.

DaisyMeadow · 29/04/2010 13:09

Yes, the hair is nice.
They believe it is a woman's crowning glory, so don't cut it.
It is interesting to see older women wearing their grey hair long and flowing, too, as you don't see this often within the general population.

Men, on the other hand, are supposed to be clean shaven, have their hair cut short at the back and on sides.

The headscarf is, I believe, a symbol of their obedience to men

Eh? Sod that
