Christian Retreat Recommendations?

CatkinsMakeMeSneeze · 23/04/2010 13:57

Can anyone recommend a Christian retreat centre that does guided retreats that you can join as an individual (rather than as part of a parish group or whatever) ? and where a catholic would feel comfortable. I need to get away for a few days.
Thanks

Green Pastures in Poole is supposed to be really good.

Don't know anyone who has been but my bible study notes have details of ones at Waverley Abbey which include women's weekends see here

Pleshey House is Anglican, but don't let that put you off , I had a fabulous retreat there. Or there's Clare priory

I think there's a superbly special place in Wales too, I can check it out, if you're interested.

Loyola Hall in Rainhill?

a close friend of mine often goes to Lea Abbey on her own, and absolutely loves it.

Worth Abbey comes very highly recommended.

Lee Abbey is quite born-again protestant rather than Catholic, though.

Horses for courses, obviously.

ahh - have never been Frogs - was just one that I know of from friend that goes a couple of times a year.

Hopefully someone else may find it useful if not the OP

I went on my own to Douai Abbey, once. Father Nicholas, who was in charge of the retreat house, looked after me so well. I was able to stand with the monks in the choir during some of the services, and ate with them in the refectory. I had space to sit and think and just be, and Father Nicholas was available if I wanted to talk with someone. I have never felt so chilled and refreshed before or since.

In fact, the effects lasted all the way from Reading to London on the train with dh and the three dses, who were very young then - dh had taken them down to Cornwall to visit his dad whilst I was at Douai.

I go to Fairacres in Oxford. They don't do guided retreats but you can speak to someone if you let them know. They have a guesthouse for 3 people and just leave you alone. it is a silent order and you would need to be comfortable with that. They like a reference from somone (eg parish Priest if you have not been there before)

a work colleague had a really positive experience at the retreat Shoshana recommended in Rainhill.

Launde Abbey/ Used by our parish church for retreats, but does individual programmes.

MaryBS · 25/04/2010 20:19

I've heard good things of Launde Abbey too. This is the one which came recommended to me in Wales:

I went to Worth Abbey for a family retreat with my DD(18 months old) as a single parent a few years ago and I couldn't have wished for a nicer place to go. Wonderfully supportive and caring.

Interesting blog on retreats.

You could hold a small church retreat, family reunion, etc., here:

Don't know where you are coming from but Nether Springs, the Mother house of the Nothumbria Community, does some great stuff.

Further north, there's the Iona Community Centres and The Bield which I have heard is very good.

Might be helpful to people from the Northern Parts if not for you!
