Bit of advice for a very spooked SIL

SheWillBeLoved · 29/03/2010 10:45

My brother and his partner moved into their new house a month or so ago. Since then, she has never felt 'right' in there, especially upstairs in her bedroom.

A few things she has mentioned is lying in bed, and hearing what sounded like a cup being put down on the windowsil. Going upstairs to clean the kids bedrooms, and a helium ballon which was downstairs floating in the corner of her living room, following her to every room upstairs to a corner which was behind her. The biggest one was she woke up on her hands and knees beside her bed, crying and with bruises on her knees the next day from lying so hard. She could have just fallen out of bed, except the side of the bed she sleeps on is pushed against a wall, but she was 'tossed' over my brother and landed beside the bed

Any advice or thoughts? She is a nervous wreck and dreads going up to see to their baby at night in case she spots anything!

TIA

I immediately considered advising getting in someone like a medium but I think the problem could be if she gets in someone from a spiritualist background or a medium they could tell her things which spook her more.
I think you should consider all the logical explanations first.
Possible explanations: balloons do travel around rooms with slightest of breeze- to do with hot air streams within centrally heated house apparently. Also sounds on windowsill could be radiators etc older houses creaking and settling. I recall doing many wacky things when sleep deprived, getting out of bed and falling asleep on knees is possible.

Don't get me wrong I am a believer in spooky goings on but at the moment many of these things could have a rational explanation, which would be far more favourable than a ghost.

But if not, perhaps it could help with the night feeds?

Thanks for the reply I'm not a great believer in most spooky things, but what she told me made the hairs stand up all over me!

The balloon - possible to move with a breeze, but follow her up the stairs, and to a corner of the room she was in but always behind her? It had also never moved since her DD's 1st birthday a few days ago, unless moved by someone in the house, so to suddenly start following her out of a room and up the stairs...!

The sleep thing - she was very much asleep in bed @ falling asleep on your knees, I know the feeling! But no, she said the thud of her landing on all fours shocked her awake, and my brother woke with the thud asked what she was doing as he hadn't felt her getting out of bed. Then she started sobbing and said she had no idea. Her DC's are all sound sleepers really, the youngest sleeping from 7-8 so she has no excuse for falling asleep on her knees really!

The cup noise could well be a radiator, our bedroom one sounds like a dripping tap most nights

I just feel so sorry for her, whatever the logic behind it all is. As I said, she's a nervous wreck and whenever she is in the house alone, she leaves so that she doesn't have to be must be awful to feel scared of your own home.

Balloon thing could be combination of the balloon slowly going down (therefore dropping when it had stayed still before) and static electricity causing it to follow her...a similar slightly eerie effect is described in an experiment here for example

  • or it might be combination of the balloon going down and a breeze, and just coincidence that it appeared to follow her.

My imagination runs riot when I am nervous and it is easy to read too much into small coincidences.

Balloon was (and still is as of today!) still fully inflated. I went there today to see my niece and there is no sign of it deflating yet. There were other people downstairs as well, would it not have been easier to follow them, rather than follow her upstairs and into 3 bedrooms?

I can't believe she let the balloon follow her into three bedrooms! I'd have been so spooked at being followed upstairs by it that I'd have popped it!

jonicomelately · 30/03/2010 19:12

LOL at idea of Mummydoit wrestling a ghost over a balloon

acorntree · 30/03/2010 21:09

Changes in the external temperature and air pressure could also temporarily effect the buoyancy of the balloon if it is not losing Helium.

You sound like you want to believe it is paranormal. If so, then you could reassure your SIL by saying this doesn?t sound like a very threatening haunting - if the worse that happens is a friendly balloon, it actually sounds quite fun to have a balloon following you round. Maybe the ghost just wants to play!

The episode with the bed thing could be sleep-walking, especially if she is stressed.

SheWillBeLoved · 30/03/2010 23:16

Acorntree, I most definitely do not want to believe it is paranormal, I've just never heard the likes of it in my life! I'm pretty cynical when it comes to this sort of stuff - but this all just seems really odd.

If it were sleep walking - surely my brother would have felt her climb over him and out of bed? Although that does sound like a very reasonable explanation and one which I'll put forward to her I imagine it'd be very easy to sleepwalk and possibly trip over something, which caused her to land on her hands and knees as she did. She has also lost a lot of weight lately due to stress, her words. Damn you logical people, I suppose I'll have to put my night vision camera back in the loft

Also, Mummydoit I said that exact thing to her today! I looked at the balloon in disbelief that it wasn't stabbed repeatedly and shoved to the bottom of the bin!

if it would give her some peace why not find out if there is a spiritual church nearby and ask someone to visit. ime these places are the real deal, not stage show charletons. (humour me!) they will help her rogue visitor on to his final destination. its worth a shot. and she doesnt have to know anything if she doesnt want to.

dunno what to believe but this would shit me up so id get the professionals in!

indigobarbie · 31/03/2010 08:18

HI I just want to ask you if (even if you are not a believer etc) if you would call on Archangel Michael to clear the energy of her house. She can also do this and imagine the house being filled with beautiful white light. You don't have to be in the house to do this either.
Like others have said AAM will assist the energy to where it should be and not be stuck in your SIL house. HTH

SheWillBeLoved · 31/03/2010 09:51

Indigobarbie - thanks for the reply I have just turned the TV off and sat in silence whilst I imagined that. Hopefully it'll bring her (and her possible lodger) some peace.

Re the sleepwalking - you said your brother would have felt her climb over him, but you also say that her side of the bed is pushed up against the wall. Does he really wake up every time she gets out of bed during the night? I swear I could jump up and down on DH's head and he'd still keep sleeping

My point is that we used to have our bed like that, and DH got so used to me climbing over his legs he stopped waking up, so the sleepwalking is a distinct possibility. Also, my mum and dad stayed at a hotel recently where a mix-up meant they had a room with twin beds instead of a double. My mum rolled over in the night, expecting to roll into dad, and fell out of bed onto her hands and knees. You should have seen the bruises she got and she got a terrible fright (as did poor dad, mind you, as she hit the floor with a terrible bang).

indigobarbie · 31/03/2010 13:08

shewillbeloved no worries, let us know how she gets on

jemart · 04/04/2010 18:28

I would have burst that ballooon by now.
I have cats and find their presence very reassuring when I'm feeling a bit spooked.
