I think we've got a little spook living with us!

Hello there,

We live in a lovely little cottage on the edge of a churchyard (not creepy at all, just peaceful with a marvellous view of an ancient and huge church!). My baby and I are often on our own in the week as DP works away. It was the churchyard keeper's cottage and has obviously been a family home for hundreds of years.

Anyway, it seems that we have another resident! I often have a sense of someone else in the room when I'm getting DD off to sleep. DD's toys and books quite often seem to get moved and the other day I heard her xylophone playing in the living room when we were upstairs!

I'm normally very down to earth not very into 'spirity' things but it feels very real and I am sure that there's nothing to be frightened of as the cottage has always had a really 'good' feel to it.

Perhaps it's just me imagining things, who knows? Anyone else think they may have some additional residents?

Have often heard people say youngsters from spirit come when there is a small child in the house.

Maybe he just enjoys the atmosphere of a small child in the house again. If he is not being mischevious then I wouldn't see any harm personally.

There will be those who will scoff at your post and say it's all in your imagination. You are entitled to your opinion.

It does seem like a good spirit, you can tell the difference. Magic has some good advice

BigWoo · 02/03/2010 16:39

I've had similar experiences in my current home. You don't have to be a deeply spiritual person to have these phenomena in your home - I wasn't at one time and yet I was very aware of other presences in my home and I was never worried about them adversely affecting my daughter or me. I often hear things in my home too. It's quite possible to have a lovely cosy home and share it with spirits. If they don't worry you then all's well. You could try saying 'hello' once in a while!

magicOC · 02/03/2010 19:32

BigWoo, I personally wouldn't dare say Hello, i'd be terrified they answered back .

I know that may sound a bit flipent, but, honestly the thought terrifies me. I have posted recently on another thread saying I had said if there was anything there i'd love to see it. Yes i'm happy now that it did oblidge, but, the morning after I was not so sure and to this day swear blind I will never think the same thought ever again.

I had a similar experiance when I lived fora couple of years in an old farm cottage. I always had the feeling that something was there. I had a strong feeling of being very welcome living there which I sensed was do with the fact I had 2 babies. On the other hand my (now ex) partner felt very unwelcome!

magicOC · 02/03/2010 19:47

Popping, the spirits obviously knew something you didn't

BigWoo · 03/03/2010 12:45

LOL! In my experience, if a spirit means you no harm then they won't 'show' themselves' in any way that will cause you alarm. If that means you'll be freaked out by hearing them say 'hello' back, or if you saw them in person so to speak, then you won't be given any signs that you can't handle. If they like you and your family, then they won't want to scare any of you away. I once went househunting with my DH and met a charming old lady absolutely desperate to sell her house and move up to sheltered acommodation in Derby to be near her son. There was nothing wrong with the house, it was immaculate, in a good location, and well within our budget but wild horses wouldn't have made me move in because there was quite simply a vile atmosphere. I really felt that the old lady's late husband didn't want her to move away from the home they shared together and he certainly didn't was to move in! It was very strange and a bit scary, especially as I had to find all kinds of daft reasons why I didn't want that house to my sceptical husband. In those days I hardly admitted to anyone how sensitive I was to spirit, although now my DH accepts it as one of quirkier attributes. Good luck with your little spook, I'm sure you can continue to co-exist in peace!

I think given your home has a lovely feeling, the spirit just adds to that. Nothing to be scared of (although may well have been freaky at first). Keep us updated.

bowbluebell · 03/03/2010 21:00

Thanks for your replies. At least you don't think I'm totally dotty!

You are all quite right that there's nothing to be scared of. In fact, perhaps it's quite nice to have a house guest when we are on our own, and maybe keeping half an eye on the bairn when I'm not looking. Don't think I'll try to engage him (think we've got a boy) in conversation though!!

It's nice to know we are not the only ones with invisible lodgers....

The only thing I would be concerned about was someone watching me in bed

ABetaDad · 04/03/2010 08:43

If you are concerned go and talk to the vicar at the local church and ask about an exorcism. It is something that our local vicar told us happens surprisingly often.

LittleSilver · 04/03/2010 19:35

I live in a VERY old cottage (bits dated from 1050) and it has the most amazing, welcoming atmosphere, which I am certain has to do with me and my DDs.

One afternoon, around 1700 (you know, the witching hour) all 3 of them were yelling at the top of their voices, I was getting stressed in the kitchen, then I honestly just felt as if someone had placed their hands upon ym shoulders and reminded me that I am not the first mum to have run the bath/supper/bed gauntlet in this cottage. Not by a long shot actually, because I later found out that a lady who lived here around WW1 had 15 children (and it was 2 bed then!)

piratecat · 04/03/2010 19:39

kreecher, thanks for that thought, that's totally freaked me now!!!!!!

bowbluebell · 04/03/2010 21:50

Hopefully my spook has the good sense to go in another room if things get too interesting in the bedroom!

I love your anecdote littlesilver. I know just what you mean. In our fireplace we still have the little space where the iron would have been kept- that always reminds me that I've got it pretty easy compared with past mums in the house.

One the mums from the village asked me today if I knew what happened to the lady who used to live in our cottage ( I don't as we bought it after renovation). She was very old, but apparantly lovely and loved the children coming past. Funny that she mentioned it just after wrote I about our spook on here...

As long as it doesn't want to get into the bed

My filthy mind, sorry

My little frien did get into the bed , but, then again it was a small child

whomovedmychocolate · 04/03/2010 22:14

Nah, you are bonkers ! Old houses move a lot. We live in a timber framed thatched place. Toys do make noises for no reason, because the house is constantly moving when cars go past.

And I have bodies in the garden too but still nothing, nada, it's all entirely explicable.

abride · 28/03/2010 11:18

When my children were younger I sometimes smelled a particular flowery perfume which I never wore and seemed old-fashioned. It never felt at all frightening. I haven't noticed it since my children grew past the toddler stage. Sometimes my dogs would stare at the walls and prick up their ears, too.

Perhaps whoever it was was very fond of babies in their lifetime.

I do notice that a particular new lamp we have bought with a touch-sensitive on-off switch is always on when we come home. Even though it has been off when we left. The spirit wants to make our house welcoming, perhaps.

BuzzingNoise · 28/03/2010 11:21

It sounds like a lovely spirit. I shouldn't think it would have any interest in bedroom antics, so don't worry there.
